Hi guys, first and formost im new to this site!:welcome2:
(ive used it for last few years keeping my freelander (06 td4 sport) going esp will all the typical issues)

i do need to post a thread now though.

ok, so about a year ago i notice.... yes... here we go.... a "knock" started:

but in comparison to all the threads on Knocks i cant get a complete match to mine... (yet)..

- it started when i engaged clutch in first with initial motion i had a "knock" then the same if i repeated in reverse. but some times it would do it and some times it wouldnt. so i lived with it (ok, so the missus did, the car was mine untill she decided it was hers...)

-its now come to the point where i need to do somthing as it a regular knock now. but now, the major deal here is that i tend to get the knock either on start up (one to two knocks) or more noticably when the engine shuts down (and the diesel shakes out i get one to two knocks)

i now get it when driving over say uneven terain. (like my dads field)
- i would describe the noise as excesive backlash on the bevel gears on the back of the gear box. ...now thats a descriptive guess.

it probibly didnt help that i haul heavy weights with it and
i heavily used it in the snow last year, and i do admit, i did do allot of slow-mo-drifting in it (all to easy and fun in the sport with the low profiles. just couldnt help doing it in the end)

i understand the rear subframe issues, and the vcu, and i will properly check those two, but the noise is up front, and not so easily heard from above the engine, more so from underneath!.

does this sound like a IRD?

im a dab hand with a spanner, ive been keeping the tornados in flight in the war against kernel kadafi...

cheers

Sounds like an engine mount to me, I doubt it's your IRD, if it started a year ago it would have let go spectacularly by now, anyway they tend to rumble before the grinding noises start.
