Hi

Almost went over to the dark side and buy a Discovery........ but picked up an 04 TD4 Sport manual that needs a little bit of work instead!!

Been quoted by a local garage £720 for fitting a new clutch and replacing the prop shaft later in the year once I'm ready to fit a replacement VCU from Bell Engineering.

Whats your thoughts on the price for that work, does it sound reasonable to you??

Thanks in advance

The clutch job is 7 hours labour as you need to drop the subframe, gearbox, IRD etc.

I would try and find a decent landy indy nearby and ask them for a price as well.
Oh and dont fit cheap parts, it's not worth it!

Yes about right - I sourced my own parts and used a good local garage - one man band who is good and it cost £650 all in.

That was new Dual Mass Flywheel as well and clutch complete and also slave cylinder.

If yours is just clutch then it's expensive.

Labour rates down here at LR independents between £50 & £60 per hr, seems rather pricey as I doubt if he's presuming the flywheel is knackered, what does his quote include ?

Thanks for the replies chaps!

The quote includes clutch and slave cylinder, so parts, labour and the dreaded VAT. He mentioned if it needed a flywheel it would be £1100.... my ears switched off then so not sure if that was total price or extra with flywheel

If his quote didn't include the flywheel then he's not included it. I would price up the parts he has quoted for then assume that the rest of his charges are for labour. Just had a quick look and the parts are roughly £160 plus 7 hrs labour @ £60 per hr should be no more than £600. Refit prop about 45 mins max.

Think the first job in the morning is to find out where he's sourcing the parts, maybe its our local LandRover stealer? Been looking on fleabay, think its maybe best if I supply them.
Thanks for the heads up Nick, appreciate it!

Pleasure, watch out for Britparts as most members don't recommend them.

I had my flywheel from eBay but it was a good make - LUK perhaps - anyhow it was £330 instead of really silly money.

Update found photo I took at time.

Hi

My clutch has started to slip with the car solo in 5th gear. After a mild panic about having to tow my caravan home from Keswick over the A66 and down the A1 for 150 miles the following day it performed perfectly with no noticable slip????? I drove all the way home with my eyes glued to the rev counter watching for it going in the opposite direction to the rev counter but nothing

The car has done nearly 100K and never had a clutch so I am tipping it may need one. I note that some kits come with the flywheel and some don't. On a tight budget so just wondering if I should ask for the flywheel changing as well?

Thanks guys

Tony

I would do it, if your car has done 100k and it's still on its original clutch then it's safe to say it will probably do another 100k before it needs another providing you buy quality parts. Asking a dual mass flywheel to do 200k is a tall order. Even if it's fine now, it might decide it has had enough in another 30k miles and then it's box out job again. I have seen a fair amount of damage done by a worn flywheel and so even though it's expensive I would still put one in for piece of mind
