When I brought my freelander I only had one key , I have found another blank key with transponder on line but what I would like to know it do I have to go to my local dealer to get it programed or can I do it my self ? I read some were this can be done .Plus what about the remote fob

you can go to timpsons the shoe repair people and get a key cut and programed for £60 but I do not think the main dealer would do it for you because they have to send away for them from Land Rover

Some older key fobs can be programmed using the existing fob, so long as it done sat inside th car. Not sure about Freelander 1's though. You may be able to get an auto locksmith to do such a thing for you, Usually at the cost than the dealer. Many 'fobs use the buttons, pressed in the set sequence to pair to the ECU and other fob.

YouTube may have a procedure that may be of use.

A word of warning/common sense NEVER keep of keys together with with same key ring(two ignition keys for example) as the cost of replacement should you lose them and having you car moved to the dealer is very expensive(my sisters Ford Ka £400-00 main dealer) and 4 working days without a car. The nearest auto locksmith refused to attend(he lived 'too far away/50 miles!!)

LR ia the easiest way to get replacement remotes as they'll order and programme them for you. It not cheap however.
Also anyone with a Hawkeye, installed with FL1 software and correct leads can program fobs for you.
There's no other user way to code fobs to the CCU.
