Finally got my own car and happy to say its one of the ones I have always wanted ! I am in love with her already but cant stop thinking of what I can upgrade or fit now. I am not going to be going mad with off roading but like to think I will do some maybe beginner runs or at least country muddy roads ! If anybody has any suggestions they would be much appreciated.. apart from if anybody send the very very original matches and petrol tank images as you know what you can do :)

Happy to join the Land Rover Club

Nice one! You will get loads of helpful advice on here:)

Nice looking car - would look even better with roof bars.

I used to have a 3 door. Only took the roof off once, and the missus moaned too much about the back being too hard to get into (especially with them non-grippy round side bars).

First car - well apart from loads of company cars, my first actual car was a TVR Chimaera, which I traded in for my first FL in 2000.

My Dad had an Imp. Little cracker, as I remember - engine in the back.

Yep - all aluminium engine - way ahead of it's time.

Certainly ahead of the anti-freeze generally available at that time.

Terrible internal corrosion problems.

Garages (even main dealers) wouldn't open them up to de-coke etc.

Imagine a rally prepared Sunbeam coupe version in the same class as a Porsche 911 - ho ho those were the days.

I had a mate in Edinburgh who rallied them - and the Davrian version.

SV.

Do a VCU check and make sure all the props are actually there, then -

pcv - get the BMW upgraded part.
EGR disable.
perhaps upgrade the headlight bulbs to Osram Nightbreakers.

Once you're sure that everything that should be there is there and is working then I have a few light modding suggestions for you:

- Light guards
- Nudge bar
- Phat tyres for muddy fun

Thanks to OP from posting, I just bought a TD4 but not my first car (think it's my 9th car), first car was a 2nd hand 1980 Ford Fiesta.

Thanks to Singvogel for practical checks and to WLJayne for suggestions. Those light guards are actually fairly affordable, the idea of a nudge bar is attractive but one linked is too "new" for my 2002, may keep an eye out for something affordable.

You will need pre facelift guards if yours is 2002 but they aren't expensive either if memory serves :).

Not seen one for years. My Dad was a stickler for early starts - so one v cold winters morning (when we had proper winters) we set off for Norwich to see grand parents. Tartan flask of ropey instant in car. Even without Motorways we got there way too early, so pulled up in a lay-by to greet the dawn. Engine off and no proper heater anyway, it were fookin freezing - I must have been about 8 years old and have never forgot this. Proper little car but sooo basic. bla blA.:)

But most of all - enjoy it.

How do I find out what headlight bulbs are currently in ? also could you tell me what PCV and EGR stand for ?

Thanks for the very warm welcome from everyone too !

PCV .. be the crankcase breather system ..
EGR .. be the 'exhaust gas recirculation' device

do a site search .. be plenty of info / pics re. those two

Used to walk past the imp on the way to school everyday - it was in bits and full of pigeon baskets but I liked it ...when I turned 17 I knocked on the owners door and offered the old bloke £150 which he accepted, me and my dad rebuilt it and it became my little buzz around - loved it!

Take a bulb out - there are 4 of course - all H7 type. Don't touch the glass. Instructions in Handbook. Have you a handbook?

The makers name will be on it - unless it comes from the 'land of chop-sticks'.
The Osram Nightbreakers and the Philips equivalent Xtreme Vision will have a very faint irredescent hint of blue.
Be careful to get the 'Plus' version - there are still folks selling the original ones which don't last so long.
OSRAM H7 NIGHTBREAKER PLUS HEADLIGHT BULBS *BRAND NEW* | eBay

pcv - positive crankcase ventilation - available at any BMW dealer for around £23. In my opinion this item is ESSENTIAL.
BMW E46 , E60 , E90 OIL SEPARATOR / BREATHER FILTER M47N , M47N2 320d 520d | eBay

EGR - exhaust gas re-circulation - if you don't want to spend £40 right away to completely bypass it, you can simply disable the valve on your engine by pulling off the vaccum pipe, which is not so good, but better than allowing soot and carbon laden gasses to re-enter the engine.
LAND ROVER FREELANDER TD4 EGR BYPASS KIT Stainless Steel | eBay

As hd3 says - do a search - there is LOADS of info on the benefits of all these items.

What happened to it?

My first car was a Hillman Avenger 1500 Super. My second car was an Avenger 1500 GT which I still own some 25 years later !!
Maybe you'll still have your Freelander in 25 years?

Amazed you still have your second car, good for you. My first car was a dark green Ford Corsair with green vynl interior that my uncle Fred gave me. Best bits were bench front seat and column gear change, just like a yank auto. Handbrake came out of dashboard as I recall. Bleddy loved the gear change. My Dad had a couple of Hunters but never an Avenger - Too sporty for him!!:D

Thanks for the links Singvogel, I have looked into your suggestions and they are definitely things im going to do.

Im happy to read that after so many different types of cars that peoples view their Freelanders as their favorites !

I am so happy with my Freelander I can quite imagine Ill have it for YEARS ..

My first car was a Hillman Imp as well, many happy hours spent rebuilding engine, floors, sills, all typical of 60s built cars, as was my next one, for a short time, a Mk1 Midget( wish I still had that one), 850 out 1100 in, followed by a 1966 Mini, also with new floors and sills, wide tyres on welded rims and an 1100 engine with 1 1/2 SU, on the origonal gearbox with a Cooper S final drive ratio and a long wobbley gear stick along with various other mod, feaces of a shiny shovel.
Next was a Mk2 Cortina 1600, rebuilt engine, 2000E gearbox and diff, next was a Mk2 Escort, started as a 1100 and finished as a 1300, next a Mk3 Estate that also started as an 1100 4 speed and fished as a 1600 with five speed. So as you can see I did like modifying my motors, just got too old for it now.

Did you know that Ford recycled the old Corsairs,

They were called the Ford Pubic
