Hi I am new on here and hopefully someone can help me with my series 1 Freelander TD4.
I have noticed a clanking noise which has progressively got worse when I turn the engine off, it is definitely coming from the front engine area. The other thing is that when driving and you get to the point where the car is moving with any deacceleration or acceleration it gives a clanking noise from the front too as you put your foot on and take it off the accelerator. I have dismissed cv joints as the clanking noise occurs when the car is stationary when the engine is turned off.

engine mount? engine moving forward and back (rocking) when accelerating or decelerating and when switching off? had this on a couple of cars before.

scrap that just read your post properly and acceleration stops it not the other way around. sounds like one of the aircon/power steering pumps or alternator bearings or possibly a belt tensioner giving out?

I tried levering the engine backwards and forwards underneath and the lower tie rod seems pretty loose with alot of movement, perhaps changing this would solve it. Anyone know of the tie rod causing noises like this?

hello there check your crankshaft pully they have a tendencey to braking up up from the rubber there pressed into which allows it to move on its self which can give you a clacketing noise cheers mike
