matching tyres '05' TD4 HSE

Hi all, Picked up my new '05' plate freelander TD4 HSE yesterday which I am very pleased with so far.
I have read articles on here about the importance of swapping all 4 tyres together etc being a 4wd and getting exactly same size. The garage i have bought it from have stuck a couple of brand new tyres on back and I am noticing at about 60mph a slight drone noise. Obviously been hearing about problems with diff etc this can cause but cant find anywhere exact compatibility charts other than just normal sizes.
On the front the freelander has budgets Sunny 225/55 17 101 wxl with plenty of tread and new tyres on back Bridgestone Turanza 225/55 17 97y. Any help please? thanks

Ditch the rubbish on the front and buy a pair of Bridgestones the same as new rear ones.

Thanks John ... mmm just what I was thinking, just googled the bridgestones, they aren't cheap but will last for ages I guess and save me money in the long run by not knackering the driveshafts etc.

Have you measured the outside diameter of both sets of tyres ?

The rear should be greater than the front .

Hello , your vcu is at risk , get under the car after a run and touch it (centre of prop shafts) i bet its hot , as mentined get on 4 the same size/make/model the tollerance is only 5mm max between front and rear tyres

Where did this 5mm come from, Ian?

And is it 5mm difference in the diameter, or the circumference, or the tread depth?

I swap mine round every 5 or 6K so the tread-depth remains the same on all 4.

The OP has a great opportunity to buy 2 new Bridgestones and thus have a matched set.

Hi sing the 5mm comes from bellengineerings site i can not remember if its diameter or circumference its one of these , at the time when i had this problem , i messured my wheel/tyres by height and found the front where 25mm shorter in height than the new michelins i put on the rear as advised on here ! , i got 2 more new michelins then remesured and from memory the difference was 3mm front to rear , not 25mm ! this saved my VCU from certain death evans halshaw put the 2 new budget tyres on the car when i got it (on the front) at the time i knew no differance

See if you can get the garage to pay for the replacement tyres. Are they all the same make/model/size? They should be as per any car. If not then see if the garage will pay for replacements.

Yes always matching tyres , i do change mine around quite often as the fronts always wear quicker than the rear . . . . .but if a great difference in wear then best ones always on the rear .

Cheers again,spoke to the garage today about this,all they said was they weren't aware of the 5mm tolerance,obviously not very obliging to pay for extra pair as the 'sunny' budgets of same size on front(225/55 17) are virtually new with masses of tread. difference in price the sunnies about £70 each and the bridgestones cheapest I can find £150 each!. New car costing me already ... grrr

Nah! ditch the hippo and keep the tyres.

I am in the same boat with Stratstones Hanley s-o-t, those sunny tyre are ok in the dry but the first time out I did a 180 on a roundabout, mind you it was like a flood also the sunny tyres are directional , mine are on the back also they are a car tyre and not recomended for 4x4 and are a summer only tyre, Stratstones would not budge insisting that they were leagle, and I said what about swaping the tyre round like you are suposed to do they said just put them to the front which would compleatly ruin the vcu as they are the newer tyre, I said you are supposed to put them on the opposite corner and you can not as they are directional tyres, I think by now they know how I feel and we do not talk about it, but the feeling will never go away with Strastones Stoke-on-Trent, I do not think i will be buying another car from there, even though the wife wants to swap hers and like one there.It will teach me to leave goodyear wranglers on and nearly new.

Cheapest way to even out the tyres for now is replace the Bridgestones with the same Sunny tyres the garage put on but keep the Bridgestones for next time the tyres need changing!! Then at a later date get two new Bridgestones and refit the older ones on the front.
Or take off the Sunny's and sell on as part warns fitting new Bridgestones in there place

There seems to be a theme going on here for as when I got my Freelander it had 2x Sunny and 2x Nankang tyres. The Sunnys looked the newest (more tread) so I took off the Nankangs and fitted a pair of Sunnys.
I know a lot of guys on here give Sunnys a hard time but I came up thru France yesterday in some pretty wet conditions and never had an issue.

Have you ever heard of punctuation?

Just back from my local tyre dealer, they took a look and said didn't want to interfere too much but the 'new' bridgestones just fitted were part worns and run flat tyres. They said they would be ok on a BMW or similar but shouldnt really have been put on the freelander.Normally 4 run flats should be fitted as well not mix 'n' match and in their opinion as previous person has said replace the bridgestones with new sunny tyres or equivalant with exact size tolerance and sell them on as they are very expensive tyres!. Now being fitted tomorrow so just see if the slight drone at 60mph is ironed out. cheers all.Not over happy as feel cheated by the garage that has just sold me the freelander!.

Yes I rambled on a bit, but in my defence, I am forgetting things like punctuation.
But at least you can read what I have said, not like some threds on here that can not spell, punctuate and can only swear . I will go back into it and punctuate sorry.

I've got Michelin Latitudes front & rear.


There is about 1mm difference in the tread depth with the best on the front. They have about 5mm tread, the rear about 4mm tread.

Is the VCU in danger?
