Hi

I'm new to all this so forgive me if I get some of the etiquette wrong.

Anyway what prompted me to join up was to see if anyone can throw some light on the following.

I took my Freelander V6 to a Land Rover dealer as it had a loud tapping noise from the engine. They said it was a recall problem and it would be done under warranty. This was an A151 Engine tune Download to stop valves rattling in the Inlet Manifold apparantly. As my car is 4 years old and out of warranty I was pleased that it would be done free of charge.

Whilst doing the recall they told me there was damage to the manifold as the work wasn't done in time. However they would replace the manifold for me for £800! I didn't take up their offer and so still have the rattle.

Is this a scam for me to pay £800 for work that should be done for free as a recall? Is there a cheaper method of fixing it or does it need repairing at all? Will the engine suffer long term damage if I ignore the noise?

If anyone has a similar experience or has some answers I would be pleased to hear them.

Sounds like they wanted to take your pants down after giving you the download FREE.

As with most things get a 2nd opinion from an independant garage, £800 seems very high to replace the manifold.

Did they actually say what the problem is with the manifold, if its cracked can it be welded ? try contacting a breakers and see if you can source a 2nd hand one and get it fitted but not by the main dealers.

Thanks for this. I'm taking it to a local garage this week for a second opinion and I'm sure they will have have a cheaper solution.
All I know about the download was to stop the Inlet Manifold Valves rattling. So I guess the noise I still hear is the rattling valves. But the main dealer just said the manifold was damaged and should be replaced.

Hi Miles,

I am having the same problem and I am the 2nd owner of the car. Do you know its recall number? I am trying to talk to LR dealer here in Melbourne. Maybe I can get lucky of getting it replace as it is a faulty part.

Hi all a recall normally has a cut off period but if the download does not work to stop the internal butterfly flaps rattling dig your heels in as the manifolds were changed free of charge,i will check out the buletin no and vin ranges and see if campain is still open, all the best tiga.

Sorry for the delay in replying as I've been on holiday.

There is some confusion if the recall covers the manifold rattle, but the following recalls were done:

A125 Speed sensor kit for gearbox

A151 Engine Tune Download

I hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for info, I'm at the stage of considering trading in for a diesel version as I've been told these have more reliable BMW engines. But if you get any morre info please let me know.

Hi Tiga,

I assume the download is some kind of software updates or something, right? how does this updates can fix the rattle as the rattle is physical mechanism.Btw, I went to LR dealer but the mechanic did not say anything about this download can fix the rattle. Are they aware of this recall or are they just playing stupid or they are....

Hi Tiga, miles

Do you know where I can get this A151 recall detail information? Coz my car is out of warranty and when I went to get it check to LR they didnt say anything about this recall that would fix the problem. If I can get this recall detail description it would be helpful to back my argument to them. Thanks guys!!

Hi sorry been away the recall no is A151 it was to adjust the angle of the butterfly valves to stop the rattling inside the manifold,i have taken the maniffold apart there is no fix as the butterflys bounce and cause ridges inside so new manifolds were fitted if the download failed to quieten the tapping as the manifold is made of plastic, will try and find out if recall is still current and any other info for you, very doubtfull you will get a second hand one chances are it will be knackered any way, talk soon tiga.
