hi guys, my landy has developed a problem. it is only noticeable on the motorway at 50mph and starts to fade once over 70mph. when i get on the motorway it does not start straight away but say after about 3 or so miles. the feeling i can only describe as it feels as though the road wheel is loose. when it is like this if you accelerate more it get more pronounced and when you take your foot off the pedal it is nice and smooth but no matter how smoothly to press the accelerator it starts to come back so only happens under load. there is a noise but it is quite quiet sound cant really describe the sound but it is a quiet dooh dooh dooh etc in time with the vibration. any ideas?. i cant make out if it is drive train or fueling problem. its a TD4 2005 model with 125k on the clock. marty

I can pretty much guarantee that if you take your propshaft off the problem will stop.
I had the same, changed VCU and bearings, problem disappeared.

when you say take off prop shaft is that the front or back, or both. and is that the same as me, vibration starts after being on the motorway for about 3 miles or so. thanks for the reply.

Don't know about the distance, it started around 50mph and went away about 70.
But, it did feel a bit like the vibration came through the steering wheel.
I took the whole prop off.

If the vibration is new, look to see if your wheels have shed any weights, if you havent cleaned the car recently it should be the cleanest patch on the wheel if you've lost any,

Dont know much about freelanders, but I would guess its shed something

Thanks for getting back. Can I leave the VCU in place or has that got to come off to?.

I can't think of a reason why it has to come off, but you might find it easier to take the prop off in one go, VCU and all.
Sometimes it's quite difficult to separate one or either end from the VCU.

thanks for that bukko i'll give it a go as soon as.

Easiest way is to take the prop and VCU off in one go, then you can also check the support bearings for roughness. Should be silky smooth, and they're usually not...

Plenty of good guides on how to do this.

Got this problem sorted now. It was the inner cv joint on the NSF drive shaft. The grease seems to have perished and turned to water as a result when drive shaft was take off to have a look one of the 3 bearings just fell off and the rest worn.
