stoke on trent
got a leak on fuel tank, found it at the top of tank inside car where pipes go in, big ring around them but its loose so splashing fuel when full down sides of tank, No clips i can see to hold it down and it does not screw down, Just put rags around it at the moment,How does it fasten please its a 1998 diesel.

your ring is like a jar lid and needs to be tightend start it of with you hands then get a piece of wood and a hammer and knock it until its tight be carefull of the hose's

ok, tried that but it wont go on, do you have to force it down and then turn it its about 3/4 in away from tank and when press down still nowhere near anything to turn on, or am i not putting enough pressure downwards on it, the pipes seem to be botteming when i try it

You need to properly locate the pump before the ring will sit into the threads and lock down.

Push the pump down first into its location, then screw the ring down around it.

Screwdriver and hammer will work find to tap the ring to lock it on :)

how do i properley locate the pump. it just seems to hang there, do u twist it or something before u screw the ring, can u brake anything by pushing the pump down as it is still connected by fuel pipes, thanks

located pump, spent 4 hours trying to press it down to put ring on, no luck, mine has no cover over it, so could i just make a plate to cover it with a thicker piece of plywood underneath to press the pump down and screw it to the floor. no way can i press the pump down far enough to locate the ring,

A few peeps have removed their pumps recently and made some comments along the lines of it being difficult to replace the pump. You have to make sure the seal is in the correct way round. Also they mention putting the seal either on the pump or in the whole first, can't remember which. Then fitting the pumps. You should also fit a new seal too. Am about to have a go at mine.

Putting wood under the metal cover in the floor to wedge down the pump... I assume this is what you mean. It's not a good idea. The pump needs to be in place with a tight seal around it. Any gap and fuel vapour will leak out. It'll cost you money in lost/evaporated fuel and may also explode if it gets near the eggsource at something like 170 degrees (fekin hot). Sort of job that needs doing correctly.

i spent a couple of hours also it is more luck than anything I can not remember but I think there might be a locating pin or something like that just have a good look at the hole and the pump but while it is loose take of the pipes first and tuck them away and pull it out and see if there is any gunge on the filter at the bottom of the pump when done leave the pipes of then press down with one hand and then screw with the other it is hard I know you can use a screw drive and a hammer but you can mess up the ring I prefer a piece of wood dowling then put your pipes back on making sure the clips which are squeez the sides type are located or they will just blow out

haveing another go today, 2 of us are going to try it, if not will press it down with wood to wedge it , then try, if no luck off to garage let them have a go

yes done that, previouse owner could not do it, so just ran low fuel level, i have wedged it down with wood and going to take it out now, even wedged down. ring will not screw, how hard this is,good job u can get at it, might keep it wedged and seal it around the edge

seal no longer leaking. wood pressing it down, might leave it now and see how it goes, easy to take on and off now, tried to put on ring again, still wont go on.
