Hi
Is the defender 200tdi a better and easier conversion then the disco? ? And if so why? Also the fitting it didnt replace cambelt and wen asked he said it does not do to much damage if it goes!! Is this true?? I thought cambelt break trashes engine!

mate i think youve answerd your own qs..

if you have a defender and want to put a defender engine in then the law of averages would say thats easier than trying to make something fit from a different vehicle.

this qs has been flogged and flogged to death on here, theres so much info you just gotta be botherd to use the search function and do a bit of reading

We're all for helping ya mate, but this is the second thread started relating to the same thing regarding your conversion.

Grab the intercooler & rad from the 200TDi ( disco or defender ) + pipe work.

do a search anorl, like Wiltshire says, it's been covered plenty of times.

Aprieciate that paul but only just realised that the engine that is in mine is a defender and thought it was a disco with def parts, hence 2nd thread ;-)

weeman, if you thought you were buying a disco engine but it turned out to be a defender engine, then consider yourself very lucky indeed.
the defender 200Tdi is a direct replacement fit for a TD but with a disco one the turbo is lower down meaning you have to do some mods,ie. you have to buy or make an exhaust down pipe, move the clutch pipe a bit and change the clutch housing backplate.
the only mods you need to do is fit a 200Tdi radiator and intercooler with the associated pipework.
good luck.

You've got it right. If the cambelt breaks the pistons and valves will go out of synchronisation which leads to lots of mashed parts.:D

If your really lucky you'll get a few bent valves.

Why would you think it would just bend the rods?

If the piston is going up and the valve is opening, they will meet, this will cause the lesser component to re arrange it's direction of travel, which will be the valve. The valve is attached to the rocker which has the rods on the opposite side which are governed by the cam.

So the valve will change direction, causing stress on the rocker arm, which in turn causes stress on the push rod and cam bearings. If the valve arm bends, it'll upset the rocker manouvering up/down which will upset and/or bend the push rod and make the cam roller bearings get upset, and then in turn the cam.

This is all happening at an exceptional speed and happening at an astonishing rate, for every revolution you are quite happily mashing up the internal working parts of your engine from stressing the piston pinion to the cam itself, each item in your engine is precision based for it's use, put one small part out of sync and you'll have a whole heap of problems and parts which may look fine, but would have undergone more stress than they were designed too.

Im not a mechanic thank god but think it dont mash engine as much cause the rods have further to trayel in the 200? Hence less impact. Can any1 else enlighten? Though i wil get belt done! Is ther any warning signs then paul seing as u know a bit about them? Cheers paul ;-)

does any1 know if the radiator brackets need cutting down for a defender rad and intercooler, like they do for a disco 1 to fit?
