I've steam (for certain) coming into the cabin (defender 110) I'm sure its a leak from a hose. BUT 2 days ago the bonnet release handle in the cabin snapped (as it was old and brittle in the cold) so I can't get the bonnet open at the mo. can anyone give a diagnosis of the steaming problem?

Get a small boy and shove him up beside the engine past the starter motor with a torch. Tip: make sure the exhaust is cold or he'll scream and you won't hear what the problem is.

Alternatively poke a sharp stick into the radiator untill all the water has drained out, the Moto being: there's no steam without water.

If all else fails use a pair of pliers to pull the bonnet cable and have a look yourself.

you can open bonnet by pulling on latch which cable runs to ,removing grille will help, sounds like heater matrix is holed ,you can remove heater unit there are 2 or 3 bolts at botttom of unit that go through bulkhead and 2 at top unclip wiring and remove the 2 hoses and it will wiggle out with some difficulty new matrix about £25 ish

sounds like the heater matrix +1

Its a bit of a pig to get out but get the bonnet off, disconnect a few pipes, juggle the matrix box around and then 20 odd screws later you'll have a busted matrix in your hand. Paddock do a good replacement and its not to costly.
