about to inherit a 2002 disco td5, but it has a few problems.

It will loose lack of power randomly

It Randomly seems to not change gear and requires easing right of the throttle and trying again hit and miss if it will find gear. im assuming its not finding gear as it gets this problem about the time you would expect it to change gear.

a bit of reading has suggested Turbo Charger Waste Gate Modulator could be an issue?

any ideas?
im getting the disco in a couple of weeks so will have more info about the problems then, would like to have a heads up before i get it as to what im going to have to get sorted.

cheers

Could be the MAF and or a dirty MAP sensor, worth a check of the red plug on the ECU under the seat for oil too. Could be the waste gate actuator like you said.

As for not finding gears, that's a separate issue I think, could be low clutch fluid from a leaking master or slave cylinder. None of the issue above are that complicated or expensive to resolve.

Is the gear change issue affect by when gearbox heats up or does it do it when cold?
Waste gate actuator is easy check, search it on youtube, I had a random power loss on td5, turned out to be ckp sensor, plug in see if any fault codes logged?

sorry its automatic.

as i say i haven't got the car yet, i was after a defender but my mother is getting rid of her disco as its mot is due and she doesnt want to spend anymore money on it lol.

so im getting it.

how difficult a job is that? by oil i assume you mean the gearbox oil? and not engine oil

im not a mechanic nor messed about much with cars.
im handy though and happy to take it apart and try. hey only way you will learn!? haha

Start with draining and changing the ATF fluid, and if you can pop the sump off and change the filter. Do you know what colour the fluid is? Does it smell burnt?

Not sure as i havent got the car yet, once i have it i will check all these things out though when i do, cheers for the help so far guys.
