Can someone please help? Can a lack of gearbox oil and a possible blocked filter cause a lack of acceleration? I put my foot on the accelerator and she has a delay before moving off. I have a 1996 diesel range. Also,I have just noticed a leak from the gearbox, could this be as a result of the possible filter blockage and if so where is it likely to be coming from?

yes..but the fact that its a 2.5l diesel has some bearing on lack of go..lol

Thanks! I'm new to Range Rovers, looking for some help and that's the kind of answer i get.

Yu do realise that he answered your Q in full?
He has said that yes, it could be part of the problem, however the doozils are known to be gutless.

If yu think that answer was poor, wait till Stirm sees this thread .
:dnfnoob:

And yu got it.
What more do yu want? A detailed gearbox strip down method sheet?
Try getting a copy of Rave. That always helps.

Yu could try pm'ing Jamesmartin - he might be willing to offer some more help, but it isn't always advisable to go delving into auto boxes.

Thanks! I just wanted some help/advice that's all.

Diesel Rangies don't accelerate well unless you kick them quite hard. When the engine is cold it feels even worse. Lack of gearbox fluid can have the same effect as a slipping clutch. Changing the box filter is one of the simpler jobs as long as you're willing to get a bit dirty. However the leak is what you want to sort out.

You might want to stick a location on your details, there might be a member on here with a similar machine, close to you, and you could compare vehicles.

Auto boxes rarely leak. If they do it is more often than not from the front main oil seal. A big job to change that. You may also see ATF coming from front or more likely rear output shaft seals on transfer box. That is not leaking from gearbox, transfer box and gearbox oil is seperate. You will have to pinpoint leak by washing box off and watching where leak is from.

And keep the fluid level right in the autobox-your handbook will tell you how cos there's a few different ways. If it gets too low it's f****** expensive! Diesel autos are sluggish at best mind.

Thank you all for your help. She has gone to a landrover specialist now, just got to wait a day or two for the verdict.

There must be lots of people with seriously knackered P38 diesels. Mine is anything but sluggish. It's less quick off the mark than the V8 of course it is, but it could never be described as sluggish.
