Ok so something that should be a reasonable easy job turned out to be a pig of a job

First off the last monkey that had been in about there had rounded the bolts that hold the alloy engine cover so lots of fecking about to get that off. Filler plug was hooring tight and drain plug was basically just nipped up

Oil was filthy and there was alot of gray thick stuff with some metal fillings in that. Not loads or big bits but felt gritty between the fingers

Should i be concerned ???

You will get a better idea of it's condition if you change the oil again in say 6K miles. This will ether be cleaner or much the same as the last time, if it's cleaner then all is ok for a while but if it's gritty again then the case hardening could be worn out on the bearings / gears.

Yes and No.

The magnetic drain plug collecting all the grey metal laden sludge is normal. The gritty metal particles are not a good sign - according to Bell Engineering.

What mileage are you on? I checked the drain plug carefully at around 90K when i changed mine and there were no gritty metal particles at that time.

Problem is that LR in their wisdom do not include a change of oil in the service schedule - instead they only say check and top up. So your oil was propably the original from the factory.

Lots of folks get caught out by draining the oil - and then finding they can't get the filler plug out.

I worded that wrong guys the grey stuff was only on the magnet not in the oil

It is on 104000 miles and dont think its ever been changed.

Vcu came off the car when i got it because it was tight on fully lock

So i guess am just waiting for it to go bang now :)

The oil will get replaced when the clutch needs replacing, or the autobox dies...

Still a **** poor idea. Right up there with no drain plug on the rear diff
