I have recently had my 300tdi auto timing belt replaced. From that moment on I have had an oil leak from the wading plug hole on my timing cover. Ok it could be that my crankshaft seal has chosen this moment to give up. But I saw this on you tube . and it has set me thinking. It has been some months since I had the belt changed and I originally thought the leak was around the oil cooler. It was only after fitting the wader plug driving 70miles then removing it that I confirmed problem in timing case. Any ideas what I should do next?

Pull the timing cover off & have a look. :)

Looks like I will need a special tool to remove pulley, looking at that video I would doubt a garage that specialises in Land rovers would put the washer the wrong side of the wheel.but it seems odd that my leak would start immediately after belt replacement?

You

I doubt it as well, but a few seconds of distraction etc etc.
Out of curiosity, what garage did you use ?
A workshop manual will give u the info u need for the 300 series and the A link below shows the tdi engine.

The tool is cheap off ebay.
I think I had to also get some quite long M5 bolts to pull the crankshaft timing gear off using the cheap puller kit.
It is not a big job at all, much easier than 200tdi.

The problem with the 300 tdis is many moons ago they had several different recalls for cambelt issues, mainly the fact it could walk off the front of the pulleys and wear away on the front cover.
Basic job was just crank pulley with raised rims around both sides, full on job was a whole new timing chest/pulleys the works basically.

Washer/spacer on correct or not is not going to be the source of your oil leak.

You will need a new cam belt as well as it will be covered in oil.

Not too happy to share garage name as at this point they could be completely innocent, local to me in Sittingbourne though.
Problem is you are going to be in catch 22.
Take it back to them and when they take it apart they could say it is something they have not touched, so you have to pay again.
Take it elsewhere and you have to pay again.

Is it your daily?

Ok its not important. Just that I used RVC at Paddock Wood once, as they not to far away, for a normal service which I could do my self, but this time the auto fluid and filter screen required replacing which would be a pain... plus I got a service stamp in the book 😊
Anyway RVC are very professional in their work in my opinion.

I doubt it would be possible for the garage to use a bit of logic and preventive maintenance and replace the crankshaft seal while they have the front of the engine stripped down, then forgot to tell u.

So welcome to the Forum and let us know how you get on.

No but it is my necessary when I tow or need to carry stuff as my other car is an MGF!

Well I have bought the tool kit required from eBay it says for manual 200/300tdi and I couldn't find the auto version but I assume it must have some way of looking similar to the flywheel hole on the manual. I will check the Haynes manual
If you have not got it fixed by the end of Sept message me.
Will do thanks

Auto locking hole is in the front face of the flywheel housing, cannot remember which side though., passenger side rings a bell.
The cheapie kits should have all the locking pins, incl the auto pin.

300 auto cover, see the oval hole with two bolt holes? I think the pin goes into one of them bolt holes, many years since I have touched a 300 auto.
I think the oval blank is so you can gain access to the torque converter bolts.
If you can find an image of the flywheel you might see the corresponding hole that line up with the pin?
