Ashcroft only renew the bearings and input gear  no point in buying on for a blown up price

What else can go wrong in one? I doubt you would be buying a worn out time bomb from them, a bit on the deep pockets side I agree but for piece of mind?
An alternative would be to find a low mileage disco box with better cruising ratios, ideal for that 600 mile motorway journey I always seem to end up doing if I want to get anywhere nice.

Exactly so why are you paying them £500 for the fitting of £76 worth of bearing and gear plus you're giving them back yours as a core unit!

Buy a low mileage disco one and check the bearings yourself. If they need doing buy the bits and get a local garage to press them on for an hours labour charge

Ok, good plan. Where is best to find a transfer box? On here, or somewhere like ebay?

My cousin makes classic tractor parts, so hopefully he will be able to help me press the bearings in etc..

here or ebay....... six and two threes

Ok, wanted add posted :)

Hopefully it makes sense!

Next question...

I want to paint the chassis ideally, don't like the bare galv.

So, do I just paint the rear crossmember, or the whole thing?

I know, I have to use t wash, then etch primer then paint.

I don't have any painting equipment, so guess I would have to brush paint it? Not ideal...I'm guessing it would take quite a few rattle cans.

Its not that easy rebuilding a tranny box, the bearings need shimmed correctly, I tried it once on an early box, that was 8 years ago, it still works today but chatters on overrun, saying that I've been all over with it and its never given me any bother but shimming it was a bit of an arse.

I bought the disco tranny innards (christmas tree gears) for 99p off of ebay.
Cheek of the bloke selling them didn't give me my penny change!

Fitting and re-shimming is easy with appropriate knowledge -lots on here!

Alm.

Ok, thanks. I will give it a go.

Does anyone have a guide on where the bolts are to remove the body from the chassis?

Oh, and how many gearbox and engine mounts do I need?

If you are jumping into this I suggest you spend a few quid on both the official land rover work shop manual and the official parts catalogue, when I rebuilt my 90 these books were so handy and made things so much easier, also take them with you if you go on any expedition, you need to know your vehicle inside out.

They don't need shimming on the input gear bearings as far as I'm aware it's only the diff which Ashcroft don't even bother with half the time

From memory mine did, several or more different size shims are available.
Mine was a very early box, 1985 vintage, none cross drilled gear.

Don't buy the workshop manual, download it free then print it off same for parts. Will cost far less and you can ruin it without having to buy another copy then

Mine didn't have them in it, this was a 1995 or 97 box though from a 300tdi

Yup, the parts catalogue (part no STC90211CC) is very good indeed. I find the exploded diagrams are even more useful than a manual when you need to know the order in which things go together - when there are different shaped washers and bushes and bearings etc. The pictures are a bit small for someone of my age, but a cheap plastic page magnifier works wonders, and also serves as a bookmark.

yes they do ,though often if you use new timken bearings or original bearings shimming works out somewhere close if not perfect, the biggest part of rebuilding a t/box is getting the preload right with shimming and collapsable spacer or selectable spacer for intermediate gear, all taper roller bearings in landies need correct preload

and replace diff cross shafts and planet gear thrust washers ,reset preload on diff gears using selectable sun gear thrust washers, id be very surprised if they didnt
