Hi Gents

I thought it would be good if I created a thread detailing the trials and tribulations of owning a discovery 1 from day one.

Vehicle.

  • 1996 (300TDI Shape)
  • 120K
  • Manual
  • No Sunroofs
  • 3.9 V8i
  • Good condition mechanically
  • Resonable condition Body/Rust wise (subject to change at anytime!!!)
  • Poor Interior
  • In need of some TLC
  • The vehicle spent the last few years in spain so i hope this has slowed the rust. (slightly)
  • Cost £995
I traded my fiat multipla against it and put £100 to it so really doesnt owe me much. The guy I bought it from (small trader) put 12months MOT on it for me so i dont have to worry to much for the next 9 months or so.

Rust wise.

  • Had some ruff repairs on rear arches.
  • Some rusting to front inner wings.
  • No rusting on headlamp mounts.
  • Sills dont look to bad.
  • Hole at the bottom of the drivers door post.
  • Not been brave enough to look at front footwells yet!!
  • Havnt pulled the carpet up in the boot yet!!
  • Chassis looks to be in good condition.
In regards to the footwells and boot floor. The boot floor looks ok from under the car so carnt be to bad. But i guessed at the price I paid for the car even if I have to replace it then it wont be a budget breaker and the car is good enough to warrant it. The footwells will hopefully be ok as the rest of the car is not to bad. This i got a bit carried away when i bought it and didnt really check it as fully as i should but I toke a chance on the body being worth some work as the mechanicals were in such good condition...

I have a company car for work so the Discovery wont be doing many miles. This allowed me to go for a V8, mainly because ive never had one and fanced it. I decided to stay away from a LPG converted one as im fine wth engines but i dont know anything about lpg and most of the ones in my price range seemed to have running problems, but like i say it wont be doing many miles so can afford the fuel.

Its main job will be towing a caravan and some light off road so i dont really want to go mad on the suspension mods and make it un-usable for towing.

I got home early yesterday so gave it a good clean out and got some rubber floor mats and boot mat for it. The paint work needs a bit of a T-Cut, will get that sorted this weekend if the weather is good. I took some pics with my phone but will start taking them with my camera from now on for a bit better quality.

Just ordered some door springs as its getting a bit of a pain having to get in the back and climb through to the front to open the doors.

I have ordered then from dcp land rover parts and they come with a fitting kit, will also be using the sticky at the top but would love to hear any tips anyones got!
