Can't find an answer with the search.
Want to jack up my 90 onto 4 axle stands to clean and paint chassis but could do with some advice on how to get it up onto stands.
I have trolley jack, standard jack and 4 axle stands.
How is it done? Where do stands go? How do you jack it up and from where.
Can't find any clear answers online that would help with a defender.
Thanks guys.

I'll give you an early serious reply...

Jack up one end (trolley jack under bell-housing), put axle stands in (under the axle - one each side), then repeat at the other.
I'd start at the front. And chock the rear wheels first, stick it in low and in 1st gear too. And if you're gonna be underneath it, make sure you use decent axle stands.

Please don't put the jack under the "bell housing" as you'll knacker your gearbox, put it under the diff instead. :)

I would **** conkers being underneath a Landy just on axle stands.... please keep the wheels on :)

So how do you work on a vehicle when it is necessary to remove the wheels?

Of course axle stands are the correct way to support it, as long as they are the correct rating then they will be fine.
Ok you can buy some Micky Mouse stands and anyone using them to support a heavy vehicle needs their head testing but hopefully most people buy the correct tools for the job and the stands they buy are well within the necessary rating. When it comes to LR's you are almost forced into buying decent ones as you don't have the reach on lightweight ones.

I took off the front bumper and put the front stands on the chassis legs, I jacked it up on the diff with some wood between the jack and diff .
The rear ones I used the towbar to jack up then axle stands under chassis legs again. Took a while to get postions right because my drive is slightly sloped but when finished I tried rocking him and wasnt moving an inch.

Has anyone used ramps rather than jacks? My thinking (as I wish to do the same when it gets warmer) is to drive the front onto a ramp, then jack and stand the rear. Once done, swap over.

i would avoid using that combination of ramps and stands, i have 2 sets of ramps if i need a landy higher with the wheels on, if i need the wheels off i normally do it one end at a time as my drive has a slight slope and it makes me edgy having all 4 off the floor

So four ramps or two ramps or just axle stands but not a combo?

If using four ramps should they all face the same way? I had someone tell me to drive the front up on ramps, then jack and slide ramps under the rear wheels facing the other direction, seemed weird to me but I've not used ramps before.

Also, can you recommend a good ramp, I don't really want to use a noofty car ramp. Sorry for the hijack, but its still on topic, just.

From experience, don't try driving onto 4 ramps on hardstanding. It's a bit of a clencher if one moves under you!!!!

Don't think a combo is a problem on a flat driveway.

Personally I've used ramps up front and axle stands on the rear, but I was nervous as hell as I had nothing stopping the LR rolling back aside from having it in gear. It is after after all a lot of metal to come down on you. My preferred option is axle stand's all round & a jack under a diff (whichever end your working on). Overkill perhaps, but better safe than sorry imo.

Unless ye're a seriously fat git.... why do ye need to lift yer motor up? Ah'm no' slimline mesel', but ah can get under me bus no probs;):D

Same ere, but seeing as the Mrs. want's to learn the way's of the force:D, I have to put it on stand's, LR never factored in large boob's when it came to fixing em:eek:
