my mate has a 300tdi discovery 1996 manual with one of those weird immobilizers that you have on a key fob wave it at the steering column it beeps then you start it

His wench was putting fuel in it at lunch time today it refused to re start no starter solonoid kick in nothing She got a bump start and brought it straight to me

I turned it off and it restarted fine

The battery is showing 13.8v and the alternator is putting out 14v all good I think
so I put on a new starter for her the old starter smelled strongly of burning

After I put the new one on it wouldnt start I tapped the starter a few times it started
So off she goes to collect kiddies from school turned it off it wouldnt start again but this time there is smoke coming up through the transmission tunnel storage box / armrest
I came out to see what was up The 100amp alternator fuse under the bonnet was damaged as in it was leaning over to one side the plastic cap has come off there is heat damage to the bottom screw on tab but the fuse is still intact

I took the big fuse out nothing worked no lights nothing I put it back in it all works

So if I change this fuse will this solve the intermittent fault did a dodgy starter cause this? or do you guys think it could be an alternator problem ?

Or could it have something to do with the weird immobilizer ?

Cheers

Gary
