intermittent petrol smell, loss of power

hi team, my 3.9 efi has a very intermittent problem. it looses power (as if a couple of cylinders have dropped out) with a strong smell of fuel when it happens.
usually does it when on the road so haven't been able to trace the fault. it only happens for a few seconds and then comes right by itself.
i thought it may have been water in the gas tank but now thinking it's electrical or injector probs?

Ignition amplifiers are known issue causing weird running faults and worth changing if age unknown, faulty coil, rotor arm or distributor cap
