Bought myself a Freelander, as a project. Was a non-runner, needed a fuel pump, fitted that, and runs OK, apart from a noisy tappet

It will be having a new MLS HG fitted regardless, as well as timing belt etc

Just wondering how to identify which tappet is the noisy one when I take them out :)

EDIT: Should mention its a K-series, but you probably already guessed that

Put an engine flush through it, didnt help with the noise

I have a set of 12 good tappets from a KV6, which isnt quite enough to do a 1.8. Just wondered if there was a way to tell which one/s are faulty

Took the head off this morning...

Suspect the tappets were fine, until the gasket was done previously...

Ill put in the 12 good ones I do have, and buy 4 new ones I reckon...

My dad told me that you can check which one is noisy by putting a long screwdriver to your ear and putting it on the tappets in order. Also works with fuel injectors apparently. Haven't tried it myself but i'd be interested to hear whether anyone else has found it to work.

Yep the old school tricks are the best - it works - I have used it to identify all sorts of engine noises - mostly on motorbikes though.

Recently I bought a cheap stethoscope off eBay to do the same thing - not tried it yet but now you have prompted me to listen to those injectors of mine.
