Ok mate, cheers, looking at that link to the thread re' wading plug the one on mine looks in a slightly different position to the Defender one, and the one thing that bothers me is that the threaded hole looks as though a plug has only just spun out as the thread and area where washer would be is spotless so maybe a plug had been there and fell out but seemed a coincidence to me that within a couple of days of detecting a knocking sound from transmission i've found what appears to be a missing plug from the bottom of the bell housing.

here are a couple more pics for you to check against....





an easy way to check is that ....
it should be at the bottom of the bell housing (clutch)
if you look up through it, you should see the flywheel.

Yep confirmed it's the wading plug hole for sure, what is the general recommendation, should a plug be fitted all the time on this one to keep road crap out of the bell housing?

Most peeps only fit it (them) when going off roading, but (and its a BIG but) it is easy to forget to fit - and then you get mud and water inside. - not a good idea.
Landrover recomends fitting them permanently and removing them every 6000 miles to check for any oil contamination. I find that the best option, and then remove and check with every oil change.

At the end of the day, its your choice.
Does the 300TDi have one in the timing cover, like the 200?

The owners manual says it does but to be honest i haven't looked yet, one ray of sunshine in all this is i think i've got to the bottom of the knocking noise when on the move, one of my work mates suggested that i pop the Disco up on axle stands and he'd have a look for me, all the UJs seemed ok as did the diffs but a casual kick of the nearside front wheel revealed something alarming....the wheel nuts were virtually off and the wheel was as loose as fook, done them up tight and took her for a drive and hey presto no noise!, quietly optimistic that this was the problem all along but i'm going to give it a week or so of driving to put my mind at ease.
p.s. made sure i checked the other wheels as well! lol

are yu saying it came back from the workshop with loose wheelnuts

well i know what they'd say, that i should have checked them after a few miles but in 24 years of driving i've never had to re-tighten wheel nuts after having wheels off, probably my fault but i was very disappointed to say the least that this happened.

I hope yu checked all the others?

Not tightening bolts up to the correct torque is just plain ****ing inconpetant./school boy **** up.

I've found out that a friend of a friend works at the place and i'll make sure they know that they let the car go without torqueing up the wheel nuts.

make sure it gets back that yu think yu was robbed anorl.
I think yu have every reason to go back in on the pretext of the loose wheel nuts, say you checked the prices anorl and that yu will make it well known that yu think they are unprofessional robbin bastards to all and sundry .

also the prob is they have your cash already.....:doh:
