Hot day: Brake pedal hard and brakes binding

Hi All,

Strange problem here. I fitted a complete set of new brakes, master/slaves, pipes etc late last year. All was well apart from taking ages to get a good pedal (bleeding with the car jacked up at the front solved this) and having to back off one front drum adjuster due to a slight binding. The pedal had the usual travel before the brakes were applied but braking was good and all four wheels were not binding (all four adjusters are fully out).

Today I fired up the old girl for a run out and the pedal had no play/take-up at all, the pedal quite hard and the brakes are binding. I gave the pedal a few still pumps and drove around the block, including both forwards and reverse, but the pedal is still hard and the brakes binding.

It was fine the last time i drove it and apart from the initial re-adjustment I have not had any binding issues. The only difference between all the other drives and today is that it is damn hot. Could this have any affect? Any help gratefully received...

has it got a servo fitted

No, it is an early (66) S2a with no servo and the older type master cylinder.

you could slacken a bleed nipple next time it does it to see if system is pressurised

I think you need to check the free play of the push rod to the master cylinder. There needs to be a 1.5mm (i think) gap which translates to about a 5mm free play on the pedal. This allows excess fluid to return to the master cylinder, but if the gap isnt there then the system pressurizes itself and the brakes stick on. As jamesmartin said crack a bleed nipple and if you get a jet of fluid - its pressurised.
