GAAAAAH .

Oh well, I was expecting it. I think the damage was done before I ever got it as I've only driven maybe 400 miles on it. Looking back over its service history, it's had HGF once before which I have no doubt was caused by the **** poor header tank leak which no one fixed and I now have. So they treated the symptom and not the cause. Also I think they only replaced the gasket and cheaped out by not doing the uprated rail, bolts and pins etc. So I'm going to do it meself this week and hopefully this will be the last arse this car throws at me for a little while :).

Good thing is that it's at the stage where only farts is getting into the coolant causing airlocks and temp spikes. No mayo thank fook. But there's no other explanation if gas is being introduced into the coolant system under pressure.

Wish me luck.

Will.

Yeh little bit but oh well, we all know it happens. The problem is now I have to figure out if any of the uprated parts have already been fitted as some are quite expensive and I don't want to order them if they're already there. I suppose I'll have to drain the oil and take the sump off to check if the uprated oil rail has been fitted?

I'm pretty sure the last HGF was fixed by spanner monkeys however, I don't think they will have fitted all the required parts.

Again, this is down to leaking from the **** poor cooling system. I've renewed alot of it now so doubt I'll get HGF again under my tender ministrations but it's a good lesson for all of us. I now do a F.L.O.W.E.R check before every journey.

1.8 peterole :). The previous owners were pretty negligent it would seem, I fixed the coolant leak soon after I got it when I realised what was going on and I've been driving carefull with daily coolant checks. But I think the damage had already been done in the 20k since its last HG change.

Can someone tell me who sells reliable uprating kits? Or the indiviual components?

Liners are known for problems on petrol. It's one of the options and something that is critical. Hippoos are known for hgf with no mayo, so yours is no exception.
Converting to doozil is not easy - see other threads on that subject.

Yeh I'm not even sure if it would be worth it. I can probably find a replacement K series cheap as a last resort.

This chap had very similar issues but I'm not quite sure how it was resolved. Not quite sure where to go from this point. I need to establish what has already been done and whether the liners are fecked. Lots of searching to do it seems.

doe's it have the remote stat fitted

also is the water pump working correctly

there are other reasons why it would pressurise the cooling system without assuming the worst

It's an 04 model so it has the dark grey coloured thermo on the bottom rad hose. I assume that's the better one.

Not sure about the water pump. When me and Diesel Do changed the coolant the other day it seemed perfectly happy with a steady flow coming back into the tank. If that's any indication of pump health?

How do I check which oil rail is fitted? Do I have to take the sump off?

Don't get me wrong. A new gasket might be enough, but yu definately need to check liners ( and DON'T move anything with the head off). To do the job "properly, will need latest gasket and oil rail and remote thermo. Yu may have the latest stuff.

Don't give up, just expect the worst and hope for the best.

Whats the part number of the remote thermo? I've seen two distinct ones, one with the baige case and one with the dark grey or black case which I have. Is there a third that I'm missing?

I'll get it sorted, not in any desperate need to go anywhere so I can take some time. I will definitely check the liners - god I hope that's not it!

dark grey is the one you need, 87 degrees and light spring ;) PEL500110

pump seems to be ok then!

i didn't bother with the new (stiffer ) oil rail and mines ok 20k later

sadly the liners can cause this and if it's this the engine is scrap

Even if the liners have gone, it is not un-recoverable.... Rave covers it, but I dont know of many peeps that have been successful. Just change the lump to a 220 Turbo lump :).
