Hi all

I bought a Discovery recently and have a problem that I wonder if anyone can help with?

The starter motor has stuck on/jammed ( ) - if I leave it the thing is going to burn out. I've tried rocking it backwards and forwards plus hitting it with the hammer but neither of those things have helped.

Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Remove the starter and put on the bench.Take off the starter solenoid and take it apart and clean. Could just be dirty and sticking, If you have had it in mud and water could be the problem

You're not from the midlands by any chance are you?

I gave someone a bump start in an asda car park who's disco had just encountered same issue

Thanks but I think it's a bit more than that.

This is a brand new starter motor - like a prat I started it up while it was still in gear, it pulled forward as I was doing other jobs at the time and couldn't get my feet on the brakes.

Anyway, it's now starting up on notch 2 - you don't even have to turn the key to start it as normal, as I say it's starting on notch 2 which obviously isn't right. Plus there are no dash lights, although these are coming on when it's started up - I've checked the fuses already.

Nightmare!

Any advice VERY much appreciated.

before burning it with electricity or killing it with the hammer, what about gently taking it apart ... it is fairl easy to remove and not a very complex mechanism to diagnose

Sounds more like a short circuit in the ignition switch than a problem with the starter to me..... :)

Hi

No burning smell. Pretty easy to get to the back of the instrument panel, trouble is I don't know what I'm looking for!!!

Thanks, Mark

A circuit diagram would help.

You need to find out why you have power going to the starter solenoid at the wrong point from the ignition switch.

If it's not shorting at the switch is the relay stuck?

OK, thanks for all the help and advice - I've sorted the problem now.

It turned out that a fuse I'd replaced this morning had caused the issue - have taken the fuse back out (the one that controlled the back wiper and electric mirrors) and the problem has resolved itself.

Probably a problem with the fuse block itself, which is a nuisance but nothing like major starter motor trouble!

Thanks again, Mark
