Yeah tried all that stuff already last night as I was thinking inhibitor switch too, anyway got the all comms down here this mornin and I had some code about key code so erased that but still no luck, I deffo think the keys gone out of sync, also the comment about not buying a car with 1 key is daft, I already ordered a key but its not here yet.

Had the same problem with mine, 4.6 petrol. Turned out to be dodgy connection between flylead to starter motor.......might be worth getting underneath and giving it a waggle then try to start it again?

Ok just so you all know I unplugged the bcm for a min and then reconnected with batt neg off and then put batt lead back on and it fired, still don't think this was cause of original issue. Will explain more tonight I'm late for work!

Yeah it did I think but that's only cos I disconnected battery last night hoping a hard reset would solve my problem! I still maintain its the inhibitor switch in gearbox playing up so I will have to look into that this weekend. I'm not too impressed with all comms so far it has to be said.

OK so got home and its definately to do with the gearbox, the wife said it started fine when she used it and now ive just gone out to start it and it started first time no problem, I then went to restart and nothing, messed about with putting it in neutral and got it started, then cut it out tried again and same no go so did the same thing, this time it still wouldnt start so I put it in low range and switched HDC on and it started, coincidence maybe as I didnt thing the low range would have done anything different. SO im guessing its this inhibitor switch now. Where exactly in the gearbox is it located? Is it in the sump and easily accessible? Can I replace it myself or what?
Cheers
Off to read Rave :)
Oh and Mozz I spoke to Martin on my way home and he said, not too sure on the P38 problem you described he would have probably advised the same thing I did as it was more a generic all car fix than anything land rover really. Gave him your number told him to ring you when he gets chance.

The inhibitor switch on the petrols is mounted to the outsider of the gearbox so no need to open up sump I think

Check rave, it will show you exact locations

Also when disconnecting the battery when it first wouldn't start did you touch the battery terminals together to discharge left over volts ?
Otherwise it may have not done a hard reset hence why unplugging the ECU sorted it

No mate, it was to do with the synchronisity between the BCM and the EMS (Aint that right Mozz ;) )

Anyway I know where it is located on the Rave manual but it doesnt mention if its the same on 2005, as far as I knew on the later models they moved it to inside the gearbox so that it sits in oil, as for removing the sump there should be no need mate it sits on the side of the actual gearbox housing externally like I say but apparently 05 on they sit in the oil so I reckon theres a hole in the side of the box and just the important bit sits in the box but is removed externally. Probably sealed with some sort of o ring. WIll find out at weekend when I attack it! Of course we could be talking about different gearboxes you and I as yours is a bit older aint it mate?

Edit looks like the info I was given is wrong way round, older ones sit in oil newer ones dont, so mine although probably more prone to elements should be a doddle to get at!! (Famous last words I know!!)

Oh right

I thought most of the changes where made during the facelift period

Late 2005 / 2006

2002 to early 2005 should be the same setup

I know on the diesel ones that are mounted inside the gearbox to get to the switch you have to remove the sump and gearbox filter

Just look underneath your gearbox, it will be easily identified if yours is mounted on the outside of the box

It's one of these!

just after I got mine had the same sort of problem turned out was an intermittent fault with the inline fuel pump under the back, would start ok but if turned off after a short journey wouldn't restart or even turn over, after a 10 minute wait would restart ,new pump sorted it.might be worth a look.

As I said though I can start it when I want by messing with gearstick and putting in neutral, so im 100% that its the switch mate.
Cheers
Gonna do it at weekend.
Oh and PS Hippo im guessing that the oil change you performed and the flushing etc solved your problem.

Yes mate, doesn't seem to have done it since I changed the oil

Might have flushed away some crud from the switch

Thats what im thinking as they do break but apparently its not the electronical part that breaks down its the physical fuctionality so ive been reading on some BMW forums.
