Help! I broke my clutch!

Hey hey,

You know the old adage "no good deed goes unpunished?"

A friend asked me to pull out some shrub bushes from his garden which had pretty deep roots. In retrospect I didn't go around it the right way - I got it so that the rope was tight between car and bush and then tried to pull away in first using the clutch to keep the revs from dying. Lots of burning smells and then afterwards the clutch felt a little vague whilst changing gear.

The situation improved a bit over the next couple of days, and I figured the clutch had just cooled off and was fine. But now (about five days later) something is very wrong - on changing gear it sometimes doesn't "bite" back down and I end up just revving the engine like the clutch pedal is down but it isn't. Also, on my journey home just now - even sitting in 5th gear, without changing or engaging the clutch, any attempt to accelerate would just see the rev counter jump up but with no increase in pull.

So, questions...

• Is the clutch irreparably fuxored?
• If there is damage, is there any way to repair it or to prevent it from worsening?
• If I need a new clutch, is this a big job and how much can I expect to pay?
• Could it be anything else other than the clutch?
• How will the condition progress? Will it continue to get worse until I can't select a gear at all? Will I cause any other damage to other components by not fixing it immediately?
• Can I still go to my off-road meet on sunday? (just bought mud tyres!)

Sounds like its knackered and needs replacing.
I wouldnt go off roading until its fixed as it may go totally and youll be stuck.

yes,no, depends on whether you can do the job yourself but i don't use garages unless i'm fooked,you will end up waiting for the aa/rac at the side of the hard shoulder **** wet through watching everybody driving past smiling,trade the tyres for a clutch kit m8, your going nowhere with it like that

You have burnt the clutch out. If you continue to use it you may cook the fly wheel. The only repair is to replace it and don't forget to break the glaze on the fly wheel. In respect of degree of difficulty, see the recent post on "clutch is slipping". You will probably need an engine hoist to get the job done as the gearbox and transfer box are heavy. Check out hire prices. A garage would want about £300.

I did exactly the same only pulling a trooper out of the mud See my thread for the pictures of the damage i did to the clutch.

A total clutch including a flywheel cost me £360 dor a 2000 disco 2 and took me a day to fit....well actually 2 cos the first clutch was faulty and had to be done again

the clutch on my disco has just started to slip so I booked it in for a new clutch and a grand price of £300 all in . Yes I know if I do it myself I save money but I dont have any place I could do it

Did mine last week £90 for the clutch and to hire a hoist. Took me and stu about 5hours start to finish. Good idea to get the fork replaced at the same time.

mr clutch wanted £299

Its really simple job to do. Far easier than a car. But if you really don't want to tackle it then mr clutch seems a good option

I've got it sorted anyway. Bought the parts today for £68 and I have a mechanic who says he will fit them for under £200.

Strange thing is - clutch was fine today... Absolute no problem - not slipping or sticking at all? What's going on?

Your not going to find out until the spinner plate is out. Took mine out and found That the clutch hub had pulled apart.


. Price quoted doesn't seem to bad to be fair.
