Do the airbags have to be replaced at 10 years old and does a message come up on the dash,Mine is a jan 2000 model so should they have been done,I can't find any paper work to back this up,is there a dodge that the dealer could of done to avoid replacing them,I'm thinking all sorts of scams this boy could of done since finding part of the loom missing for the low range box

all manufacturers as far as iam aware recommend airbag replacement at 10 years but in all my time in the motor trade i have never ever seen this done.
no a message wouldnt come up and personally i wouldnt worry about having them replaced

The design life of the LR airbags is 7/8 years 80K miles. The message that comes up on the dash is EAS fault slow 35mph when the cumulative small leaks cause premature death of the compressor and you land on the bump stops. The can also blow like a tyre which could be exciting/leathal depending where and at what speed it happens.
They are so cheap and easy to replace that IMO it's not woth taking a chance. Perished airbags ought to be an MOT failure item:whoosh:

I agree. My '03 td5 is having a new rear set tomoro. I have a very intermittent o/s prob with mine where it sits on its arse occasionally, very annoying, it's done 71k original set but time for some new ones.

They are.

I didnt know that about the MOT, interesting as mine was MOTd November and been to a LR dealer for inspection due to my intermittent airbag problem, my bags "look" ok, height sensors fine etc etc but I need to change them first port of call due to the sagging occasionally. Mind you, it could be something else causing it (hope not!) so they gotta be well past if they are perished and shouldn't be allowed to get that bad IMO.

If they LOOK ok then they will not be failed. But an obvious leak in the system should be a fail or if they are obviously deteriorated. Cracked/split have cord showing.

I think that this guy is talking of airbags as in steering wheels.

Yes they are supposed to only have a ten year life but the cost of replacing them with new would be prohibitive.

Stay quiet about SRS bags. You can bet your bottom dollar those pricks in Europe will want a certificate of replacement some time soon.

10 years for side airbags 15 years for the fronts according to the info on mine. I binned the side airbags, they are useless as I found out when one blew the seat to bits after a minor off road excursion on the ice a couple of years ago.
