Hello guys and gals

Few questions, some have been covered and after a few hours looking and researching seem to get different views and some poss out of date.
Here goes:
-If I got a 2007 hard top defender how much is the tax and can I drive it in london or will I have to pay the £100 fee (ouch) if not fee is that only because it's after 2006 so a puma engine?

- is this the case is was the same year but a station wagon?

- if it turns out to be that I can't go into london am I allowed to drive on the m25 or does that count as the LEZ?

Thanks if anyone can help out there.
Jack

I have done, but seem to get conflicting answers on things, so an up to date answers on the specific questions would be brilliant if any one else out there fancies helping out.
Cheers

generally inside M25 is LEZ with a small section outside it near brentwood. think late models are Ok put your VIN no / reg in the website for an answer.

Thank you. So I think the 2007 models should be fine in the LEZ without fine is that right?
As for tax, am I right thinking its much less to tax a hard top rather than a station wagon? Is this to do with the post 2006 puma engine or just general?

you need to check the reg on the tfl/lez website, it all hinges on what DVLA have it registered as.

for example, there were a few 90's which had been converted from van top to station wagon by cutting windows in and fitting seats etc, but DVLA still have it shown as commercial so would fall foul of the LEZ if it was a certain age/engine type.

vehicles registered/taxed as commercials have a flat rate tax of (I think) £220 per year irrespective of engine / transmission type, but their non-commercial counterparts are based on engine / transmission type.

For example, I used to own a freelander commercial, td4 auto. If it had been the car version, the tax would have been £415, but as a commercial, it was only £220.

here is a link to the checker:

Thank you for that. I take it the fact I wouldn't be using the hard top for anything commercial is irrelevant?

Do you really think it's quite likely that the rules will change and for 2007 landys not being able to enter the LEZ?
Can just about stomach that if the case but not the tax going up-£220-250 is max I could handle.

Thanks again

what you are using it for is irrelevant, it is all based on how the vehicle was registered when built.

I am sure in time the rules will change, they always do, but whether you can stay ahead with a 2007 landy, I am unsure. If it's the puma engine, which I think was used in the transit, then it is unlikely to change in the near future owing to the vast amount of vehicles this would affect, but no-one really knows.

after a certain date, all defenders are registered as commercial, it was how they got round the euro rules for some of the safety stuff for a bit longer.

If you only rarely go into the LEZ it might be viable to just park outside and use the tube/train - the saving on tax would pay for a fair bit of that.

But don't forget that if you are commercial you will pay extra at tolls, eg Dartford crossing, Severn Bridge etc. They have cameras so that even if you go through the self-pay lane, they will send you a bill (and fine?) if you pay the wrong amount.

must remember the bit of M25 and Brentwood/Lakeside areas included in the LEZ

Corrected your typo :D

If it's the puma engine, which I think was used in the transit, then it is likely to change in the near future owing to the vast amount of new vehicles they would sell and the tax it'll generate

Wow-it feels like hard work trying to be a defender owner!!
Can anyone shed any definite light on this as could be a potential problem for me:
If I'm traveling on the a127 wanting to turn right onto the m25 does this count as within the LEZ? As its actually on the boarder so not sure if that small stretch is in or out? Here's the map

Thanks. Also how much would the toll at dart ford crossing be then with a hard top?

Thanks people
