my landrover seems to have a sticky handbrake, the first time I noticed it I had let off the handbrake fully. but when I changed up to second the gearbox ground and clunked and refused and I had to pull over straight away.

took the middle hatch off, and tapped the handbrake actuator with a screwdriver and it fixed it. but afterwards I tried the handbrake and it stuck again.

any ideas why its doing this? all the linkages have been oiled.

Is the return spring still connected? Goes from the rod connecting the lever to the relay to the gearbox. Failing that could the shoes have lost their springs or be crudded up?

just checked the return spring, it was a thin stretched one, checked on my parts vehicle and the spring was much thicker, stronger and not stretched, so I replaced that.

but it still seems to be rubbing slightly when released. not binding like before but still rubbing.

might have a look inside it and see whats up

Check the brake shoe adjuster - it might have been adjusted up to make it work if the shoes are oily.

should be a nut either side of the handbrake lever where the rod attaches to the clevis pin. (under seat box) have seen in past where both nuts are on top side of clevis, allowing rod to be pulled up, but not pushed down when released.
worth a look next time your in there.
