Halford tools sets ???

Bought a 120 piece set today on the strength of this thread. Looks good, £80 well spent me thinks.

Need to get myself down there to get myself something! They should be offering us a LZ discount for this thread!

i like em , the only thing that annoys me is the 1/2 inch stuff is all 12 point - which is fine for landy brakes but its pish for all the other bolts.

so i bought bahco 1/2" 6 point flank drive set. its the nuts and wasnt pricy - 40 quid iirc.

The only halfords thing i broke was the long 1/2" extension...but i was being silly - i ran out of impact extensions and was having a hassle with a bolt down in the enginebay...so i stuck inthe 12" halfords extension.

only issue i have with halfords is - when i needed something it was never on deal.... so i borrowed it and waited for it to be on deal - for full price halfords you can get better but its hard to beat on deal.

Yeh, this sounds like an advert for Halfords.

I'm sure mine's a Halfords set and its ****e. I can never find it when I want it, and when I do find it, the socket I need is always the one I've lost. Fecking useless.

But still, you haven't broken it... Just lost the whole set or just the socket you need!

Mind you we do have Repco and SuperCheap Auto (you may have seen their sponsoring if you follow the Aussie V8s).

For my birthday, my misses bought me this from one of them. Might have come from the same Chinese factory as the Halfords stuff !



It hasn't seen the Freelander let (its just far to reliable), but has been put to use on my son's 220 and building a planter round our pond.

I have two sets of halford imperial sockets a 12 point and 6point both seem durable and did the job with out problem, never got round to buying a full halfords socket set, mines built up from a mis match of different companies.

They seem ok on replacing things on return as i got a spark plug socket but i'd got the wrong size so returned it and they replaced it with the right size 16mm, the size etched on socket was wrong though 10mm never returned it as it fitted and worked, just a factory error.

Spark plug sockets are sized by the thread size not the hex head size like regular sockets and spanners....

So a 10mm spark plug socket is for spark plugs with m10 threads and has a 16mm hexagon...... Confusing or what?

digi are the 6 point 1/4 inch and the 12 point 3/8s or 1/2 ?

i have 6 point 1/4" halfords stuff but thats for taking things like wendy houses and ponys to bits isnt it ? real men use 1/2 inch on breaker bars .... or at least i do.

their impact driver sockets are 6 point - but also REALLY thick wall.

ideally id like an imperial 1/2 inch set for 6 point chromies but since i cant find em ill make do with my imperial impact sockets and use 12point where they dont fit.

The 6 point are 1/4" and the 12's are 3/8", now you've done it, i'll add a set of 1/2" imperial sockets to my tool list.

The only 1/2" sockets i have is a 13 piece metric set of sealey impact sockets off ebay for around 14 quid, i have to say there not bad for the price and fit the nuts and bolts snuggly i've used them on, not sure how they'd hold up in a garage enviroment been used and abused on daily basis but for evening and weekend use at home there good value.

I got a decent set in the foldable black plastic case. Can't fault the tools cus even if they break you can get it replaced for free. the case however, its made from plastic, the hinges on mine snapped when it slipped out of my hand and hit the floor (it only fell 6 inches), unfortunately the case doesn't come with the lifetime guarantee, so I no longer have a decent case to keep my tools in

I've been looking for a torque wrench also but what size covers the most often used settings on my fl1 td4 ??

I have searched the forum and noted not everyone needs/wants/uses one but I just thought for a newbie like myself it might be a useful thing to have.

I note the ranges are either low (8-10 upwards ) or high (60+) I know ideally you probably would have both but at this moment I feel that could be overkill for me. Any one care to enlighten me ? is there a wrench that covers 75% of my needs that's a reasonable price.

Thanks again for any help. I have noted others have benefitted from the thread about Halfords tools so It may just be a help to others that have wondered about this as well.

I have a Britool torque wrench. It cost me around £25 .......,, in 1984.

It's like nearly £200 now. It is good though, and I have just had it recalibrated.

looks good that dom - ill keep an eye out for a keen price once i get the smurf on the road as it looks like it could deal with most roadside/offroad emergencies

i use teng torque wrenches- they are about 40 quid each dave but generally i only torque up head bolts / caliper bolts and wheel nuts.

to the lad whos broke his halfords case - for certain sets you get inlay trays for rollcabs. - of course they have change the contents of the set since i bought mine so was left with empty bays - priced up the missing kit in halfords - was about 60 quid... poke that - populated it off ebay with halfords kit for 15.

Thanks, I have just ordered 1 .. I have the 200 peice toolkit, so will have a few bits floating around, but better than carrying the whole lot in a carrier bag lol.

Halfords | Halfords Advanced Professional 200 Piece Socket and Ratchet Spanner Set

I joined the Halfords Pro Tool movement today. A mate won a set in a raffle and he had no interest in them so I got a 200 piece off him for a little over a £100. So tomorrow all my odds and sods sockets, ratchet spanner etc will be going. Hopefully it will reduce the time spent digging in the tool box for the wrong sized spanner or socket.
