Gearbox problem advice please

Hi all, am after a bit of advice.

I bought an S reg Discovery 300 TDI today - yesterday on the test drive it was all fine but on the way home from collecting it today it developed the following problem. There's no overheating and it seems to me that the problem has developed as it got warm.

Driving on the motorway at 70 was fine with no problems, when I got off the motorway and pulled up at the lights I noticed there's a clonking sound when I changed from 1st to 2nd gear. Not a crunch, a clonk is the best way to describe it!!! I can also feel slackness in the gears and the gear change isn't as tight as it should be.

Does this indicate serious gearbox problems or something relatively minor. Either way, any ideas on cost to put it right?

check mainshaft and input spline wear by removing pto cover on rear of t/box,check oil condition and level in both boxes and diff ,check prop ujs and slide,diffs for excessive play and feel free play in transfer box by rocking both out put flanges at same time,

OK, thanks for your help - unfortunately that's a bit beyond me!!!

I'm in Longbridge (Birmingham), are there any local mechanics that could diagnose the problem for me? And how much would it cost?

Without driving the vehicle it is difficult to diagnose a noise, and it's causes, but when you said this happens between first and second it reminds of the noise a rear A-frame ball-joint makes. Does it clunk if you drive over rough ground?

IF it is this ball-joint the part is cheap but the job can be difficult and it sounds as though you might prefer a garage to do the repair. Remember the part is cheap though!!!!

I've also noticed it does the same from 4th to 3rd and you have to do the clutch very gently and slowly. I'm not sure about using on rough ground as I only drove it on the motorway and 'normal' roads!

I didn't mean yomping off into the outback, but there must be a bit of rough ground near you where you could do a test??? Grass verges? Lorry park? Old car park?

The last time I visited England I found rough ground all over - the M1, the M25 and most of the A roads
