Hi

The garage that take care of my P38 (1995 Auto 4.6HSE no LPG) advised me to change the GB or get a rebuilt. I took the rebuilt option and ordered mine from ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk. The box has been fitted with the correct oil and we changed the Transfer Case oil as well. There are some improvement BUT...

1. I still have a "kick" from 1 to 2 at low rev (nothing at high rev)
2. I still have difficulties to move from P to D when the car is cold. Twice I heard the GB "scream" when I went to drive. To make it work when I feel some resistance is to push the pedal brake several times and the small trigger on the Gear lever, then it will be better. Sometimes (Stop the car for an hour or so or in traffic Jam), changing from P to D is just flawless

These are not normal, I contacted ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk for the Kick and they said that there is nothing to do.

Now I maybe naive but let's assume that ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk and the garage are not at fault. What could cause the two problem above? Problem with the Selector (P to D)? Transfer Case?

Still the change of Gear Box is appreciable, above 2000rpm gear change are silky smooth and going to D to R or other gear is also very smooth.

check your cable for p to d when cold thats not a box issue, when you build a clutch pack if you leave a large gap between the last plate and circlip it can be noticeable when pressurised

Thanks! I will ask the guys to have a look for that, but can you tell me what do you mean by "Check the cable"? The length or quality ?

With all the slack in the drive line, transfer box & diffs, a little jolt 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st seems normal to me.

Ok so I should not be too worried about this, and the "jolt" or "kick" only happen from 1 to 2 (never from 2 to 1) when the car shift gear at its minimal gear ratio low rev (hope I am clear). Flat out no problems whatsoever.

As far as i am aware the petrol gearbox ECU has adaptive values it learns over time from the manner in which the car is driven. If you have had a faulty gearbox it will have adjusted to try and compensate. When you fit a new box you need to reset the ECU adaptive values or the ECU will be using the settings it used on the old gearbox. That maybe why you are getting the harsh change. Don't know if your year of car will have this though.

this is correct - if we are talking electronic HP24 - it will have been compensating for the fault and is now likely to be over-compensating.

Give it some time and it will auto-adjust and settle down.

If it's a 4.6 with an HP24, the adaptive values should be reset with diagnostics when a new box is fitted if I remember correctly.

Thanks guys! Actually they may have rested everything since I lost Seat memory, Rear mirror deap memory, Radio memory and so on... But I will clarify this with them.

Still my understanding is that the ECU will adapt slowly to the new Box and this explain why they told me that I may see some change within a month.

Anyway I will check with them regarding the needed "freedom" for the Gear lever from P to D.

Once again guys thank you very much for your kind assistance!
