hi guys.
having a bit of trouble with my freelander, its a 2001 TD4.
sometimes when starting it it makes a strange noise and doesnt start, some times it does it once or 5 time then starts, recently its been making a different noise, more of a click/ticking noise and wont start, im thinking its the starter motor but really i have no idea, iv priced a new one up at around £130, if it is the starter motor is i best to get a new one, or have my own fixed/reconditioned.

kind regards, lee

Does the engine turn when your trying to start or does the engine just click? There's a repair available for the starter motor.

hi hippo.
at first it used to turn over but just made a grinding noise, then recently its just been clicking,

cheers, lee

Could just be your battery that hasn't got enough grunt to turn the starter. The cold weather will soon seek out a failing battery. The tolerances between excellent, normal and poor charge condition are something like 0.2v. Anything under 12.5v is considered "poor charge", and, in the very -ve temperatures we've had of late, the starter probably won't turn and will just click at you.

Put the battery on charge for a while and see how that fares. If it's OK for a bit and then starts failing again then assume its knackered.

As Hippo says, there is a fixing kit for the starter, priced about £10 off eBay, as there is a common problem that occurs with Denso starters, BUT I'd plump for the battery in this weather.

Charge it up and see what happens.

well iv charged be battery, cleaned the terminals, had the starter motor off and had it all cleaned, and when i say (iv) i really mean my brother who is a mechanic, and touch wood its ok now.
so cheers, for everyones help.

Lee
