My friend gave me a 2003 V6 Freelander with LPG conversion. It sat outside my house for a few months. I decided to fix it up. I changed plugs, battery etc. Engine is running well now.

But, After i drive for a few miles there is an intermittent noise when pulling away. I thought it was the VCU and after some advice removed the propshaft. To my dismay the noise has returned.

Strangely, when all the engine warning lights are on amber TC ABS etc it runs fine, then after a few miles and after a stop the warning lights go out and a grinding noise kicks in with a judder when braking, it is weird it feels very unsafe like a pulling feeling, it can be quite mild and can feel very aggressive.

I am at a loss and don't want to spend too much money on a run around!

Any advice would be really welcome!

Sounds like you have an ABS issue and when the lights are on ABS won't work hence the problem not being present

You need to get the codes read out the engine management and abs to determine what's up

Where you based?

Also go to the introduce section please :)

Thanks for the reply!

I am based in North London (Wembley)

It may be an ABS issue will drill into that a bit! Can I switch the ABS off?

I tried with my mechanic friend to hook up the computer to the engine management system today and he tells me there is no power running to it and cannot get a reading. So, will have to try other methods!

Any ideas welcome? Would the ABS make it judder and grind?

could it be a drive shaft or something it sounds like it is coming from off side front wheel area?

P.S i went to the introduce section

ABS would make the car judder and grind as it is cycling the braking force to that wheel.

Also your car has traction control which uses the brake system and works using the same basic components - wheel speed sensors

The abs modulator is in the front off side corner so it's more then likely that causing the noises you hear

Need to get it hooked up to a proper diag machine forFL1 like T4, Autologic or hawkeye to pull the codes from abs

Thanks for the advice. It is really helpful. This is very concerning didn't want to spend too much money on the vehicle.

I just need to get my head around this. would it still judder and grind when pulling away because that is when it is at its worst. And it generally doesn't do it at the start of the day, it usually happens after a stop at traffic lights etc 10/15 minutes down the road. I use the vehicle to run around and transport building materials and tools

my mechanic has hooked it up to his snap on (small) diagnostic tool and there is no power going to it from the connection so I may have a problem.

I am pretty desperate to get this fixed so any advice from the forum would be appreciated?
