I've recently acquired a 2004 2.5L V6 Auto Freelander, replacing my older 1.8L from 1999.

The steering is considerably 'firmer' than one on my old one, which I find surprising given that in every other respect the new model is substantially improved. Before I take it to a mechanic to inspect the power steering, does anyone know if the firmer steering is something to expect with the 2.5L V6 Auto?

Thanks to all in advance.

Wouldn't have thought it would be much different to other Fl1's. Is the auxilary belt slipping on the power steering pump? Are the tyres at the correct pressure (most use 30psi or there-abouts). Have you got enough fluid in the power steering system? What tyres you got?

What do you mean by firmer? Is it heavier? Does the car feel more responsive to steering input? I don't know if they used a slightly quicker rack in the V6? If the rack is the same then it could be the extra weight over the front wheels making it heavier, the KV6 is 100 Kg's or so more than the 1.8. All of it over front wheels ;)
