yes both hands been free is best ,if your welding your disco puddle welding (making your own spot welds by drilling holes in top or outer layer to fill ) is a very usefull technique
 
That all makes sense Rob. From what you describe about the wire speed and looking at the condition of the tip after a 'go' I think you may have nailed it, the arc is certianly cutting in and out. Now you've mentioned it I can see the issue, at the time I was totally confused.:D

Guess how I am able to describe it so well :suspicious: I went through the same steep learning curve a few months ago!

The spares pack is a good idea to have in stock too.

I have been using 0.6mm wire for all my welding on the Disco

You got to do all the preparation work, and when she's hot and the juices are flowing, you can adjust the power and speed to maximise your penetration! ;);)

If you try and rush things, it ain't going to happen! :D:D:D

A side note. I did actually spend a fair bit of time cleaning the plates. For some reason after welding them they go brown!? I am guessing the metal is ****e and the rust is all the way through?

Thanks Evil, I'll give that a go. I have read about pushing and pulling the torch and there seems to be equal number of people saying either is fine. I pulled with these, the next batch I will push
 
don't use pub gas it' not pure .
you can get clean co2 from most fire extinguisher places like arco . i pay £12 for a pub gas bottle refill

He isn't using pub gas, he posted earlier that he was using argoshield
 
Agree with Evil pushing will give you better gas shielding coverage.

Cant tell for sure if this joint attempt was overlapped or butt welded?

If doing this as a butt weld I would start on 2 (low) and place several tack welds along the joint every few inches. This ensures the heat doesn't pull the work pieces apart as you try to place a run of weld.
Then start to join the tacks up with beads of weld possibly upping the power to 3 (low) Welding two sheets together you should push and also weave / zig zag between the two sheets keeping an eye on how much heat is being generated.

Methinks its butt. I go with a high ish heat and tack everything in place then turn it down and seam
