Hi All,

Can anyone recomend a good, yet resonably priced, ECU fault code reader for the TD4 freebie?

What code am i likely to be able to read, just engine and gear box?

Thanks

Thanks Nick, Its a 2001. I'm i right in thinking that the systems is OBDII compliant?

Sorry but almost certain that it's not, OBD11 was not a requirement on diesels until 2004/5. Both the reader/scanners I have (cheapo and expensive) state that diesels up to 2004 are not covered.

Hi, Here is my experience on this...

Can's say for sure about a 2001 TD4 but my 2003 TD4 (pre face lift) I believe is EOBD. I use an Elm 327 box from fleebay (less than a tenner) with a laptop and some free software from the internet. Seams to read most codes on mine and a few live stats on sensors using Centrafuse software. Port is located passenger foot well right side. Freelanders also used Testbook but not sure what models or dates.

Testbook is the T4 which does everything, but costs many £k's. This is what main dealers use. ELM327 (the proper version not the cheap china copies) should be able to read all Freelanders. Not all Freelanders are odbii complient. They talk a different language. If your ELM327 reader can't start comms first time then leep trying and it will talk on the 4th or 5th attempt, as it changes languages. But as above you'll only see limited values. If you want more, then hawkeye for about £300. Black box solutions do something also but not sure which one is suitable. My hawkeye come wiv 1 license for one version of LR. Mines set to Freelander 1. If I pay more (£165 I think) then they will add say a D3, or FL2. There's some hawkeye video's in me orf road link below, as the said to be product eggspurts can't be bothered, shorry don't supply a manwell wiv it.

I too have 2001 TD4,
I've 2no. generic scanners, here is the results I get:

Air intake temperature
RPM
Map
coolant temperature
Throttle position
Vehicle speed sensor

Generic readers that I'm using are Elm 327 and autel ms509

Have a look at these freds:

Generally anything petrol 2001 onwards should be odbii complient. Anything diesel 2004 onwards should be complient too. However, we has found that vehicles earlier than those above still work sometimes. It seems to down to what your using, and the vehicle. Some after those dates don't work, as it's somehow been deactivated - non lr's. Regardless of this, or what tool yer had, it's down to the manufactirer how much complience they've included. Most only do the bear minimum as what Mcgyver lists above. That will give min sopec but at least you can get fault codes. T4 also called testbook is what lr dealers use. Hawkeye is the next best thing. Black box solutions do stuff too but not sure what model is needed. If it's cheap it will only see 1 ecm and nowt else. Hawkeye can see the auto, abs, security (loads of non security stiff too) computers etc. T4 can see the whole lot and every feautre on them. Cost is proportional to what yer get. Hence a basic elm327 or even an expensive verion won't tell you if the tailgate glass is down.
