hi all,
i`m new on here and not very mechanically minded(not much going for me). this is my first LR and i like it a lot and want to keep it for sometime. i have a 55 plate freelander 1 diesel and this has started to happen when the engine is running the engine revs up and down on its own on tick over and when i am driving it feels as though the engine is being starved.it has had a new fuel injection pump and fuel filters recently. could anyone help me :D ta.

i have a 55 plate freelander 1 diesel

assuming that's a td4 version (?)

it has had a new fuel injection pump and fuel filters recently

revs up 'n down when idling and feels fuel starved while driving ..

is it still misbehaving ?? ( wondering if trapped air has worked itself thru the system )

it could be a result of that work .. like maybe it's sucking air into the fuel supply ..
or something got disturbed and now there's crap partially blocking the fuel supply

one thing you could try .. and it be fairly easy ..
be to check the fuel-rail sensor connection plug for corrosion/grime on the contacts
that connector is prone to water ingress .. as is the injector wiring harness ..
an iffy connection there can cause all sorts of symptoms
( after heavy rain .. open the bonnet and see if there's a pool of water round the
oil filler cap .. ) ..
so good idea in general is to clean all those wiring connectors for the injectors
and sensors .. and smear some 'contralube' dielectric grease on them ..

that goes for the fuel pressure regulator connector on the h.p. pump as well
( as a precaution )

have a look through pages on this site ..
maybe something describes your engine's symptoms :

ROVER 75 MGZT ENGINE FAULT FINDING

Maf sensor problems.

~~~~~~~
tbh. the cause could be a number of things ..
though i'd suspect .. or check .. the fuel supply to start with ..
it has had a new fuel injection pump
the high pressure pump ?? ( which would be termed 'fuel-injection-pump .. probably )
or the 12v low pressure pump by the fuel tank 'n rear wheel arch ?
and if the latter .. be it a LR oem version .. or cheaper version ?
maybe the egr valve is playing up ??
( not sure if that would cause such symptoms )
just putting ideas forward fer when this thread gets bumped :)
maybe someone else has some theories to offer .. or maybe not :-/
try a LandyZone search for "engine revs up and down" .. or similar ..
( there be a few threads .. but one's i saw were inconclusive as to the cause )
and .. have you inquired with the people who did the pump 'n filter work ???
( was it a LR garage ? .. friends d.i.y. job ? .. neither ? )
~~~~~

hows about the fuel quality itself ? ..
has the 'sedimenter' been drained at all ??
( is the fuel free of any water ? .. "diesel rhino" will combat that btw. .. google it )

~~~~
when was the crankcase breather vent system and filter last serviced ??
and .. has the turbo vent filter ever been changed ??
( again .. not sure if those two would cause those symptoms
( just trying to cover a few bases ..
are the symptoms continuous .. or do they vanish after the engines been warmed up to operating temps ..
( thinking along the lines the weather has been wet and 'effing cold lately :)
i'm out of ideas for now ..
