hey guys, well I cleaned my egr out the other month but decided to buy and fit an egr bypass today,
got my fingers in the inlet manifold and scooped out as much sludge as I could reach (consistency of melted mars bars).. I plan to remove it and give it a Mr muscle soaking at the weekend.
question-since my last clean it's got fairly oily in the egr..so-where does all the oil come from? my only guess is from the turbo-should it spit out atomised oil into the air stream?

When I fitted my EGR bypass I also changed the crankcase breather filter, after fitting the new breather the intake system now seems to be clear of oil. I also fitted new intercooler pipes as the original ones had swollen, these are also still virtually oil free.

The crankcase breather discharges into the inlet of the turbo, as much as there are measures to separate out the oil contained in the crankcase emissions some will always get through and condense in the intercooler and hoses.

I tried the oven cleaner method to clean out all of the boost pipework but in the end white spirit and a paintbrush on a stick got the most gunge out.

The bypass and clean up made a very noticeable improvement to performance.

cheers all-replaced my breather for a new filter one last month..maybe I should try the new BMW part!?
well if this oil is getting through it might be worth me rinsing the intercooler out-it must be choked up to the gunnels with oil contamination :-/

Fitted my EGR bypass today and cleaned out the inlet manifold, could not believe how much crud was in it for a 50k miles engine, breather filter has been regularly changed. Perfectly clean upto the EGR then once the exhausts gas are introduced every thing is choked up with a carbon and oil crap.

Used oven cleaner, gunk and pressure washer which made a nice job of cleaning out the manifold.

Engine took some starting once all put back together but I think that was due to the manifold been wet. It has made such a difference to the performance, especially when pulling out into traffic at road junctions. Well worth the effort and money.

Called in to see my mate who owns the local MOT station as I wondered if it would cause a problem with emissions, he said they were better than before so hope they stay like that for the MOT in 6 months.

Thanks for the info on this forum without which I wouldn't have bothered changing out the EGR.

Paul
