Any views or help welcome - I have recently noticed a knocking or clonking sound which is not prop or drive train related but seems to be coming form the steering on my 82,000 2005 TD5.

I have not changed any of the front bushes on the damper, cross rod assembly or track rods and have narrowed down the noise to movement in the steering damper front to back over about a 50 degree range. When forward it is hitting the drag arm and drop arm ball joint or something is this area. The bushes all look fine and there is not oil or splits apparent.

1. Can anyone tell me if this front to back movement of the damper and cross rod assembly (9 on the attached diagram) is normal?

2. Has anyone overhauled the drop arm ball joint – any tips or help would be welcome (I understand there is a maintenance kit)?

3. Is is worth swapping out the steering damper for a more expensive one?

Thanks

Aye cheers... might've done the same kinda thing if ah still had me Rally 180, p200, etc;)
Aye it's normal... well it is a ball joint after all and rotates all ways:rolleyes: :p:D

lambrettas way better than vespa rallys tho busterbus,,ha ha.
Aye but mines was special, it came from cyprus;) Ah made it even more special by hackin' off the leg shields, cuttin' the seat box down, stickin' a bike tank on, ditchin' the side panels and paintin' it matt black around 1984-6 (ish)... probably the furst of it's kind fur this area;):D

like it,proper scooterboy style, not like those puffy mods..the scenes still alive and thriving..thats why lambrettas and rallys cost so much now,as people like us choppd em,6000 to 8000 grand for sx,even seen gp at that, then 3000 grand to 4000 for good rally..gone are the days of getting em for 50 quid for .sorry for hyjacking post...

Ah'm shakin' me heid just now as when ah left the old caravan where ah stayed at, and where we all met up, ah just left me scooters fur the takin'! Me Rally 180 cost me £30 (two Giros and scrounge some food)... scary innit!;):D:D

Thanks Buster - I had already downloaded your three guides to drop arm ball joint and the cross rod and track rod replacements. Looked like you had trouble getting the drop arm of the steering box - I was going to see if I could get a replacement arm with the ball joint assembly pre-fitted. Your guides are excellent - many thanks.
Nae wurries mate;) Just glad ye've got some idea as tae what's involved;)
