hi all :)
over last couple of days the car as as had a lumpy ticker over, never thought much of it.however when out notice strange smell, power still there.checked exhaust and it running blue popped bonnet and smoke smell of burning oil coming out of dipstick also from rocker aswell. engine as 168537 miles could it be the rings:( wouldnt care mot in couple of weeks aswell car discovery 200tdi any advice cheers in advance

well just been out in the rain and got a good soaking, took breather off and it clear, started it with breather off and smoke just pilled out of rocker and dipstick just waiting for rain to ease off so i can take pipe off sump to check it not blocked

even tho i havent removed pipe from sump yet would i still get smoke from this if it werent blocked and oil level above pipe at sump cheers in advance

IIRC that pipe at the sump end is below the filter level so don't remove it from there.

Sounds to me like you have crankcase pressure, probably from piston ring blow by. The power will still be there because the oil is helping with compression but I'd say that it is burning oil; particularly with a blue exhaust smoke.

thanks andy, for repley again,
now has ive never come across this problem and funds are limited, would it be worth getting a compression test and if its one cyclinder knackered im i best renewing the rings on that one or doing the lot.also car is a discovery could it be done with engine in car thanks again

hi all,
ive read that the discovery and defender 200 tdi engines have a difference, meaning that the disco engine has to come out for removing pistons due to a strengthener plate at the bottom of the block and defenders dont have that so pistons can be removed with engine in place. anyone know of this.

Never heard this but wouldn't have thought so as both engines are identical. it's mainly manifold and timing belt/waterpump covers etc that are different.
