hi my 1999 disco td5 has just started to misfire & lost power think it might be fuel pump as no noise from pump is there anyone in welwyn garden city area that has a diagnostic tester that they could plug in just to confirm what i am thinking is right or if anyone has had this before & can help with which way to go with this would be very greatfull
thanks

Well couple of easy tests to see if the pump in the tank is working. Start it up , bang it in neutral, see what it rev limits at , if it limits at like 3.5k, sounds like the pump is inop.

Switch the engine off, turn ignition to 2 , pump the accelerator pedal 5 times , the EML light will flash and if you go over to the fuel tank , you should be able to hear a squeeeling noise, thats your pump self bleeding.

You could also undo the WIF (water in fuel) sensor from the bottom of your fuel filter, take it off. wait for the fuel to drain out of it, turn your ignition on , see if it starts flowing out.

Lastly (and equipped with a phillips head screw driver) go into yuor boot , remove the centre strip from the carpet retaining trim, to reveal 5+ screws , remove them , remove the plastic carpet inserts in the middle of your carpet if you have third row seats, pull up the carpet, remove the 4+ screws that hold your fuel pump cover down , remove the cover plate , put your hand on the pump and cycle the ignition. Can you feel it vibrate? If not , multimeter onto the connector onto it and check for your 12v supply and decent earth.

..........or you could try kicking the fuel tank a few times :) whatever :)

Note : If your fuel pump is working fine , try removing your engine cover (2x13mm) unplugging your injector harness (front left under rockercover) see if its got oil in it, if there is signs of oil there , remove engine ECU from behind battery, check for oil in there :)

hi thanks for that i did check the ecu & cleaned it but thinking more & more that its pump as if you leave it idling its drives ok for about a min then feels like running out of fuel as for kicking it i gave it a few then a few f**ks but still would not play ball so going to have dinner then start taking the boot to bits:(
