You've got to remember though that being subwoofers you won't get 'normal' music out of them, they're just playing sub bass, not mid or high ranges.

Tbh though having had my subs out and looked at them and the amp, I wouldn't have thought you'd ever have got a good sound out of them, they're terrible quality, like really, really bad.

I'd turn down the bass and turn up your treble a bit though as a short term fix

Get a new head unit asap if I were you. That'll be a hell of a sound quality upgrade, and with a half decent one you'll be able to control the bass on the amp separately, so keeping a decent amount of bass out of the full range (not just sub bass) door speakers.

Tarantula.. Bear with me on this. If I do the speaker upgrade that is on this thread and change the head unit things will be better. The speakers I can do via internet, and the headunit will have to come the same way by the postal donkey. We have nothing like Halfords here... Stick your neck out.. Recommend a head unit ( Half decent) That I can then order on line without ever hearing it operate.

TBH anything made by pioneer alpine or clarion that costs over 100 GBP will be more than enough.

alpine do make some cracking sets, even the cheaper range is good.

just paid £162 for an alpine 9886r delivered, superb bit of kit, was £300 when first came out. Control ipod, memory stick, cd etc etc. Really nice clear sound. Google for prices, you can get an adapter so you can still use steering wheel controls.

Very nice, my Alpine is here ready and waiting to be put in. Needs to be secondarily directly wired to the battery, so not quite as simple as usual! Can't wait though, that plus my 2600w rms amplifier and 2k rms dual 12" sub box meant I was setting off car alarms when I turned it up Bit more sensible installation now though I think!!

So what about amp location, where exactly to put it? it's either blocking the movement of the speakers, or move it somewhere totaly different it seems..

I would think that you would have a permanent and a ignition switch 12v supply already existing as used by your old head unit.

So would I! Sadly not.

It's not using the connectors as per any head unit.

This is a high power Alpine stereo, £500 + originally. When you plug it in to existing wiring in any car, it looks complete, but won't power. You have to have a secondary power source, direct to battery. Last motor had separate clamps to the battery and an in line fuse.

It's a problem cos when running without the engine on, I've usually got about 30 seconds before the battery'll drain ;D

Depending on what rms the headunit outputs, you might find that the 10 amp supply to the cigarette lighter is sufficient...? Might be a bit easier that running a separate feed, unless you want to

Nice, not the standard amp then? I am debating putting my proper amp in should I not find a convenient way of getting the old one back in the rear door

Thought I'd have a look at seeing if I could get the subs working in mine. Unfortunately the black plastic speaker mount is buggered. Don't suppose anyone has a spare?

Will the amp need changing to run new subs? Or better yet, does anybody know the RMS power of the original subs?

Sidewaysste - I've seen a couple on eBay / ask someone breaking their Disco?
