Disco 300 TDI and Husky winch combo meal

Hi, been on here a year or so now with my old disco, love the site, i couldn't count how many times its helped me out and got me out of trouble, hopefully one of you nice chaps can help me again!

I've been looking for a winch for a while now preferably 2nd hand and good rather than cheap Chinese crap and seen a Superwinch husky and defender bumper locally and snapped it up, the winch works perfectly although the ropes a bit rusty and neglected, at first I foolishly hoped that I would just modify the defender bumper to fit and fettle up the edges and it would look fine...... No way, bumper would mount about 4 inches below the bottom of the grill... Anyone fitted one of these beasts to the front of a disco before? Usually I would just weld something up and be happy but looking for some inspiration and advice though

Wait, figured it out, move the solenoid pack to the engine bay and mount the winch in front of radiator on a plate welded onto the steering guard, probably need to trim some bumper away but should work out pretty tidy, any thoughts?

Why don't you just get a proper bumper for it??

I have a husky on my classic, and the bumper cost me a couple of hundred to have made.

I can't find any bumpers for sale for a disco and a husky, only standard winches, I'm also very reluctant to spend much on the bumper because I don't have the money to spend and I've got time and a welder

I got in touch with one of the sellers on ebay and had one made to order.

Paul your thread was my original inspiration and ill probably nearly copy your idea however it originally wasn't going to work as the husky is wider than the chassis rails so wouldn't fit, but I'm going to unbolt the solenoid pack tomorrow and try again, the husky should fit in perfectly without it though, just ,move it up onto a wing or something and see how it looks then, do you have any more pictures than the ones on your thread?

No, not yet.

However, I just got a new motor and when I get round to it I have a couple more ideas about the winch and re-positioning it slightly. I have Dyneema rope for it and the hawse for that fits behind the front bumper, which I don't like, for if I have to take a tight line ...

Mind, that won't be done till Jan, we're away in the caravan from tomorrow .. Peterboro!!

I'll update the thread as and when I re-build the winch with the new motor and re-model the plate/bumper ...

Thanks, I intend to keep the winch as far forward as possible without cutting too much away from the front bumper since the husky fair lead bolts directly to the winch and I'm not happy about taking it off and moving the fair lead forward off the winch housing in case it weakens it.

I'll take plenty of pictures though in case anyone wants to see how I did it, I've also got an idea about how to operate the free spool leaver remotely but while it should work on my winch I'm not sure about others

I had a husky fitted to my last disco. Originally I had a plate made up which sat between chassis rails tight to rad. Cut a bit of the grill out to suit. Then cut some of standard bumper to suit. It looked and worked a treat. I had the huskey mounting plate on mine too so the fairlead sat just above the bumper. I later bought a standard winch bumper and modified it to fit in there as the standard bumpers are quite weak. I bento me on a pay and play day hitch made it look ****e. But can be done

The main problem for me with just buying a bumper is that because I'm in NI I need to palletise it to get it here with adds a lot onto the cost, hence why I want to just make it myself

Also has anyone on here had to rebuild a husky? When operated the free spool leaver hisses and water comes out so assuming the o ring is long worn out.

Yeah grill has gone and the standard one is back on. I'll sell the mesh to some boy ricer for his pimped up 1ltr corsa or something lol

Husky fitted, wired, and working, meant to take plenty of pics during building it up but forgot to take camera to workshop with me.

Winch stripped and rebuilt, replaced seals and regreased, drained water and replaced oil, got a mounting plate cut by local fabricators them welded the plate into a steering guard, cut out some of the plastic spoiler and enough steel bumper for the fairlead to poke out.








Still have to get a hook on, modify bull bars so they fit again and sort out some front recovery eyes, lamp behind grill so can watch cable reeling in again and some wiring so there is a back up switch for if the wireless remote fails

Shall put up some more pics next weekend of the finished article and how it's worked out, so far I'm very impressed at how well it's all fitted, huskys fill the gap behind the bumper of discos almost too much though compared to standard winches

Hi , great Idea that mounting and please accept my apologies as I dont want to sound like a safety jobsworth but that cable really should be replaced IMO ....

Just a thought .. the rope looks to be on the wrong way round. What I mean is they usually go onto the drum from underneath. Husky may be different, i don't know, but most winches I've seen are underslung not over ..

Dunno if it'll make any difference mind ...

The ropes actually like new just a bit of surface rust on it, apparently it was replaced 2 years ago as standard BT service and repair, the pictures make it look rotten but I assure you it's in very good condition, and yeah the plonker I bought it off had no idea, I have got the rope spooled the proper direction now thanks

The finished product for now very happy with how it's turned out so far and pulls slowly but looks unstoppable
