disco 1 or disco 2

I have a disco1 300tdi but really like the look of the td5 my question is, which is better for off-road use? Pros and cons, people's experiences what would you go for? Cheers chaps

td5 are too complicated for decent offroad use imho..too much electrickery and gadgets to go wrong ...

200 tdi is the best

The disco 2 is certainly more refined and has more power on tap than the disco 1. True, its got plenty more electronically controlled stuff but they aren't as fragile as you'd think. I've got mine in Africa where driving out of the city centers could very quickly turn into a greenlaning expedition, but in a year and a half of having it here, I've only got it stuck once when it ended up in a clay sinkhole and had to be towed out by a truck. I believe its biggest plus over the previous disco is the fact that its got better rust protection and wont rot away as quickly as they did. I have a few engine modifications and have a straight through exhaust with no silencers that's got it surprising the boy racers at the stop lights.

Disco 2 for me
The 2 has a bit more overhang on the rear but apart from that the dimensions are the same and the electronics on the 2 will only help with its off road ability "if they work"
And they drive better on road

I've got a disco 1 and was toying with the idea of getting a disco2 but after hearing many people's experiences(problems) with them It really put me off getting one. Very rarely heard anyone who uses theirs for off roading have a good word to say about them. Plus the price of parts also contributes towards it. Disco 1 parts are buttons in comparison.

there arnt that many purely offroad disco 2s out there as people tend to have them as daily drivers and do the odd bit of laneing etc..

theres far more disco 1s out there that are purely offroaders/weekend toys..i doubt if in yrs to come there will be the same ratio d2 offroaders out there

I have a 300tdi as a daily drive and greenlane when ever I can

My V8 has been no end of problems but from what I've read on here and other places disco 2 don't like water even the diesels and the 200TDI's are almost bullet proof! I would still have the 300TDI

Sorry but I'm disco 2 all the way. But we all different & have our favourites. ( & just incase I have owned the 2)

Like it or not, as all the D1,s slowly turn to rust coloured dust, the D2 will be the natural progression for offroad use.

The D2 has been demonized in respect of its electical systems, wrongly in opinion.

The D2 is VERY capable offroad, ( partly due to electonics ). With a good set of AT tyres and a centre locking diff and a good operator, theres not nany places they cant go.

The TD5 engine is very reliable if serviced regularly and the D2 runs the same gearboxes as the 300,s.

Dont get me wrong, the D1 is great offroad, ( I had one ), but unless you can stop it rotting away, eventually you're going to have to get something else.

For purely off road fun I'd have a 300tdi, for use as a daily driver and occasional greenlane tool I'd have Td5 all the way.
Although I think I was lucky with the Td5 that I had as it was base spec on coils with much less elektrickery to go wrong.
It's the rust in the chassis that's the Achilles heel of the Td5 and explains why I moved up to a P38 now as mines mint underneath compared to some newer Discos...
