I am going to remove the broken IRD from my 2l diesel Freelander this weekend (if it doesn't rain).

I have seen that you can whip them out without removing the sub-frame on a 1.8, but a TD4 needs the sub-frame removed. Do I need to remove the sub-frame to get the IRD out of my L-series.

Any tips specific to the L-series?

I didn't need to remove the sub frame when removing and installing the IRD on my L Series.

Have plenty of room under the car - I've taken IRDs off on L & K Series from an inspection pit - wouldn't want to do it on my back, but plenty have (to). Neither needed the sub frame removed and the L Series doesn't need the exhaust removed either - just swing the driver's side hub out of the way so you can pop the driveshaft out - disconnect the cooling pipes - then undo the huge number of bolts holding it in place. It is fiddly lowering it, and it is heavy - so be careful it doesn't drop!

Have plenty of extension bars for your socket set - some of the bolts have restricted access by them, so you need to be turning the ratchet quite a distance away (eg in the wheel arch if necessary). I also found that having an extension for the ratchet arm (a short pole slid over it) helped immensely at getting leverage to crack the bolts - but does mean you may only get 1 notch of a turn.

Probably forgotten some other bits - but that's the gist of things.

Good luck.

Thanks. Sounds the same as doing the 1.8 then with access a little worse. Got an air impact gun so hopefully that will take the strain out of taking out bolts. No pit or ramp though so its going to be on axle stands
