The TD4 master cylinder is on the bulkhead and can be changed independently of the slave which is inside the bell housing.

If the op's problem is the master cylinder then this is not too expensive to change and can be bled.

And if its the slave, it'll be taking the gearbox out?

He s not wrong , just replaced mine , due to a vibrating/squeaking noise it was making , £72 for OEM ap Lockheed part , L R part was £165  if theres no leak from the bellhousing , its worth a shot first .

I had the same clutch symptoms and cured it by changing the master cylinder on the bulkhead.

Mine cost £90 but only because I wanted it quickly and popped down to euro car parts. Same on eBay would have been £69 ish.

Simple to change too - its even possible without any tools as it just clips into place and comes pre-filled with fluid so doesn't need bleeding. Mine was a 30 minute job, 20 of which were spent splitting the pipe union thing.

Definitely worth a shot before hauling the gearbox out...
