Hello,

I should be picking up a 2006 Freelander TD4 HSE later this week.

One mod I have seen is a remap of the chip or a stand-alone box made by Chip express.

I have test-driven the car & compared to my 300 Disco it's quite lively. I just wondered if anyone has tried either mod and if they are worth the money.

The car won't do too many miles a year - maybe 3000 - but anything that gives a better driving experience or better mpg is worth considering.

So here is the choice as I see it:-

1) Remap by local Land Rover Independent

2) One of Rover Ron's Synergy units

3) Chip Express.


What do you reckon? What would you do?

Hi DD,

Ask yourself which one is:

1. Easily adjustable by you, from the driver's seat if possible?
2. DIY fit? With minimum tools, and no cutting / splicing of wires?
3. Reversible?
4. Transferrable to any another vehicle or resold readily?

For me this is a 'no-brainer' - but I'm biased - I've now driven over 12K miles with a RonBox Synergy2a+ with a dash-switch.

I'm very, very happy with it. :D :D

Dumb question (and my first post on here...just bought an 05 TD4)...

If you fit one of these boxes, do you have to let your insurance company know, and if so, can anyone say how much their premium went up by?

That is 237 miles including 30 miles towing a caravan, a lot of motorway & some town/side roads. Not Good!

Dealer says the breather was done at service. Put a can of injector cleaner in last time too.

RoverRon here I come!!

Spoke to my insurance company about fitting a 2e and they said, if it doesn't increase the power they are not fussed.

just wondering why you would want to spend that sort of cash if you are only doing 3000 per year. Now singvogel up north travels the world and so it would make sense for him. The saving would be worth it but for 3000 miles???? I find that a bloody good service is a good place to start.

I assume yours has an auto gearbox on it with that mpg.
 
synergy 2 all day for me to iv just done a round trip to brighton today and loads of town driving 235 miles just returned 40 mpg love my ron box
id say 160 at motorway speed and rest round town never missed a beat and the extra power on the motorway was great
 
One of the reasons I have just fitted the Synergy 2a+ with in cab three position switch and new MAF was due to poor fuel consumption (probably caused by a faulty Bosch MAF) Haven't had chance to compare the mpg yet but no longer have the hesitation on acceleration and considerably more power even on the ECO 1 setting (note to Singvogel, yes your absolutely right setting 7 seems a retrograde step, so it's 8 for me) :)

I'm not really fussed about added power. JUST NEED MORE MPG.!! Don't know whether to do the maf as well.

06 plate. 75k miles.
 
Hopefully the ECO 1 setting should see an increase in MPG, I've never been able to get more than 31 mpg so, according to other Forum members, an increase to mid 30's should be the norm.

Hi DD,

OK your looking to get more mpg - I can empathise totally with that.

In my experience with various cars over many years - if you have the power, but use it gently - you get the improved mpg.

The Pierburg MAF from RoverRon is not that much more to ensure that all is as efficient as possible.

In everyday conditions my auto-box TD4 can consistently give figures in the upper 30s mpg without really trying - so if I was trying........??

If you do the mods that most of us have done - I would think that you can't fail to get a big improvement.

This is the order I did mine:

Change all filters (get decent quality ones - Mahle or Mann preferably) including the fuel filter, and the turbo boost solenoid breather. Having a clean air-filter is perhaps the most important factor in obtaining better mpg.

Use a bottle of injector cleaner additive.

EGR and Intake ducting - clean it up and disconnect or preferable fit an EGR by-pass.

pcv - fit the upgraded BMW Oil Separator cyclone part.

Use 250ml of mineral base 2-stroke oil per full tankful.

Turbo hoses - check for leaks and splits (perhaps fit silicone ones - def don't replace the original rubber type)

Fit a Synergy 2a+ and a dash switch.

Consider the tyres you have - aggressive A/T tyres look the biss - but if you don't really need them in summer then a good modern road tyre will have less rolling resistance and give improved mpg.

Each of these steps will bring a benefit - perhaps not each one a dramatic improvement - but cumulatively it will be quite noticeable. It's definitely not all about power. I just wanted the vehicle to be as efficient as possible due to the regular long journeys I make.

Hey Singvogel...good to hear from you again.

Bought the car from an independent LR dealer who says he's done all the filters and the pcv already. I can check the air filter myself just to see if he really did do it all.

Put a bottle of injector cleaner in last tank.

EGR. Bypass kit I think will be done

Engine & all hoses look ok but I'll give them a double-check. Engine runs fine so assume hoses aok.

I was going to go for the 2e to avoid any insurance hassles. What do you think? I'm surprised you put this so low on the list

Tyres are normal road tyres

Yeh, understand that. I reckon, if I can get another 8mpg it will apy for itself in 1 year, and I will start saving. Anyway, I begrudge Osborne all that extra bloody fuel duty.:mad:
 
I am getting 36 mpg from a 2001 TD4 Auto with 99k doing all the service and the mods except from ther rover ron. That is doing 28 miles return to work in brum. Just being very gentle with the heavy pedal

Been real gentle on the pedal. Guess the 30 miles towing a 4 wheeler caravan didn't help!

I'll gradually get the things done. None of them seem too difficult.
