Audit, Resources & Performance Committee Agenda 3 June 2011

They are proceeding with the 18 month ban - which - they are only putting in place at the end of the temporary current closure for repairs. Bit harsh... they could have started the 18 month ban then repaired it in that time.

There are some exceptions though - if you fancy arguing with the law you could still lane it, but, by the sounds of it (not seen for myself) the repairs have kind of destroyed half the fun parts anyway.

now that just takes the **** y cant they just leave it alone 4 us 2 injoy

Because winching should not be done on a PRoW, is why.
Two of our guys went up it last October and it took them 6 hours! There was no way I would have even bothered - that's not laning in my opinion. The rest of us had a day out elsewhere instead.
Winching should be a last ditch solution if things have gone wrong and if planned and recce'd properly things don't just 'go wrong'.
Winches should stay where off roading stays, at P&P sites.

Well they were either not obeying the one way system or need driving lessons. There is no requirement to winch on chapel gate. If you take it steady and drive sensibly you can drive the whole thing.

Only time we've had to use a winch on Chapel Gate was when one guys motor died and we couldn't fix it.

Final Update - and say good bye to Chapel Gate as i doubt we will ever see it again as a useable lane :(

Recreational “off-road” vehicles to be excluded from Chapel Gate track for 18 months

A legal order has been made banning recreational trail-bikes, quad-bikes and 4x4s from a Peak District National Park country track for 18 months.

The Peak District National Park Authority announced in June that it was planning to make an Experimental Traffic Order at Chapel Gate, a country track between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Edale.

A legal notice has now been made which means no recreational motor vehicles can use the route from August 31 until the end of February 2013, towards the end of which time a decision will made on whether to make a permanent ban.

The trial ban affects a 3km route which skirts Rushup Edge and runs along a high ridge crossing a landscape of the highest international importance for its wildlife and natural beauty.

Christopher Pennell, chair of audit, resources and performance committee which decided to make the order, said: “Chapel Gate is an important route because it runs through a Special Area of Conservation, a Special Protection Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

“Unfortunately, as the course of the route became badly rutted, people deviated onto the land at the side of the track and damaged the fragile wildlife habitats there.”

Full details of the Experimental Traffic Order at Chapel Gate can be seen by visiting Chapel Gate experimental traffic regulation order

Christopher said: “During the 18 month trial, we will assess how successful this approach is in conserving the national park landscape and decide whether we need to make the ban permanent, vary it or discontinue it.”

The Peak District National Park Authority has the power to make traffic regulation orders to conserve the landscape’s natural beauty and wildlife.
